It is hard to deny the good luck of numerology when considering that this year the popular downtown sushi bar 5 Fusion celebrated its fifth year—and, coincidentally, its head chef, Joe Kim, was nominated for a prestigious James Beard Award. Considered the Oscars of the food world, a nomination is an extremely impressive honor. Kim, who grew up part-time in Central Oregon before traveling through some of the world’s most renowned restaurants and then returned to Bend several years ago, was pleased to provide five choices (and two extras) for his favorite dishes and drinks in town.

1. Ariana’s duck dish

2. Spandantti’s gnocchi

3. Summit’s tacos!!!

4. Zydeco’s ability to create a place where celiacs can eat

5. Astro Lounge’s manhattans 

6. Barrio’s Cuban sandwich

And, seven, that I can get produce and jewelry from the same family (24 Carrot Produce & Ice).
