Bend City Manager Eric King signed a weather emergency declaration Oct. 30, effective Nov. 3. The declaration paves the way for “approved alternative shelter facilities” to offer places for people to sleep when the weather is expected to be below 25 degrees Fahrenheit, and when other shelter facilities in Bend are at capacity.

According to a Nov. 3 release from the City of Bend, the City is anticipating that severe weather this winter will force local shelters to be at capacity—likely meaning there will be a need for extra indoor sleeping space for people without other places to go.

King’s declaration expires Feb. 28. To qualify for the alternative shelter facility status, facilities have to pass a fire safety inspection through the Bend Fire Department Prevention Division.
