But He Didn’t Inhale

Mike Erickson, a Republican running for Congress in Oregon's 5th District over by Portland, is trying to defend himself against charges that a "humanitarian" trip he took to Cuba in 2004 was mostly a partying, sightseeing, cigar-smoking junket.

Blowin’ in the Wind?

T.A. Barnhart of the BlueOregon blog made the daring voyage over the hill to Bend with The Bus Project last weekend to ring doorbells for state legislative candidate Judy Stiegler, and says he saw signs of encouragement for the Democrats: Tibetan prayer flags.

Merkley vs. Smith: The Mud Thickens

Republican Sen. Gordon Smith is out with another ad hitting Jeff Merkley for redecorating legislative offices - prompting a counterattack from Merkley accusing the Smith campaign of "hypocrisy" and a counter-counterattack from Smith's side accusing the Merkleyites of "flat-out lying."

Spillway Remains Deadly

On Saturday evening another person was rescued from drowning in the spillway. He was a floater with an air mattress and ended up in the middle of the river fighting to get away from the spillway.

Cruise Yourself: Seeing Bend by bike

Big wheels keep on turning. Imagine yourself as a 20-year-old college student without a care in the world, save maybe Nike's working conditions in Indonesia. You've got three months of free time before fall term and only one problem, no money.

In the post sub-prime and post-post dot.com world, what's a student to do?โ€ฆ

Fight the Bite!: Take sensible precautions against mosquitos

Female mosquito doing her thing… Well, we might as well go right to the Bad News first: Mosquitoes are Bad News for Homo sapiens; they carry and spread all kinds of nasty diseases that make life very difficult for us. The first documented case of a mosquito carrying West Nile Virus for this year wasโ€ฆ

Full Metal Junket: Stiller’s latest is predictably over the top

Jungle boogie. In the decade since he became a household name Ben Stiller has drifted primarily towards two comfortably generic personas: the tightly-wound, put-upon Everyman (see: Meet the Parents, Night at the Museum) and the preening buffoon (see: Zoolander, Starsky & Hutch). All the world loves a clown, and Stiller has been content to beโ€ฆ

Life in the Express Lane: Stoner action flick with a conscience

Truth is, we ran out of waterboards. The Apatow comedy train chugs along with a new installment, Pineapple Express.

You cannot get more of a skeletal plot here. Dale Denton (Seth Rogen), a 26-year-old process server with an inexplicable high school girlfriend, witnesses a murder while on the job and exits the scene leavingโ€ฆ

Keeping it Casual: Scanlon’s remains on the short list

the more things change, the more they stay the same. When someone would ask me 15 years ago what Bend’s best restaurant was, I would always say “Scanlon’s.” The food was consistently prepared with variety and creativity, but it was familiar and accessible. The atmosphere was subdued, but not stuffy, and it was the onlyโ€ฆ

Double Your Fun

Don’t throw Stuff at Tiger Army, Please. It was two bands, one night, one building - all at once. It was the first full utilization (or perhaps near-full utilization) of the Midtown Music Hall that Sound Check could remember. It was Tiger Army psychobillying it up in the Domino Room and Blue Turtle Seduction holding aโ€ฆ

Old School Twist of Fate: Dr. Dog takes lo-fi to a high level

It’s back to the coal mine for Dr. Dog…that’s what a hit record will get ya.Dr. Dog

Fate ★★★★✩

Park the Van Records

Sometimes, the newest music sounds old, and you like it even more just for that express reason. Such is the case with Fate, an 11-track collection of rustically poppy cutsโ€ฆ

Mosley Wotta CD Release Party

thursday 14

Mosley Wotta, aka Person People's The Rook, aka Bend's walking talent show Jason Graham drops his new buzz-generating EP entitled "Scrap Mettle" and throws a big ol' party with some special friends to celebrate. The EP, consisting of five tracks of Wotta's now well-known precise and cerebralโ€ฆ

When Bigger Isn’t Better: New schools and class size in Oregon

Last year, five-year-old Madi Sebulsky attended Summit High School - sort of. Madi, along with approximately 35 other four, five and six-year-olds went to kindergarten at the high school because their school, High Lakes Elementary, didn't have enough classroom space to house all the newly arrived kindergartners. In an effort to keep class sizes fromโ€ฆ

The Council’s Builder Bailout

Privatize the profits and socialize the costs - it's The American Way. We saw it in action on a large scale earlier this summer with the federal bailout of Bear Stearns, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. And last week we saw it on a smaller scale in Bend, when the city council voted to bailโ€ฆ

The Crucifixion of Ben Westlund

I do not know Ben Westlund, nor have I ever met him, but for the past four days The Bulletin has been crying out "Crucify him, Crucify him, Crucify him." These words have a Biblical ring to them and have now taken on a more contemporary rendition.

Reckless Growth Ruins

I am opposed to the Bend Municipal Airport Urban Renewal Plan, especially with the downturn in the economy. Now is not the time to pursue a $10 million plan at the expense of the taxpayers.

Ignore Westlund Bashing

Thank you for your editorial about State Senator Ben Westlund, Democratic Candidate for State Treasurer. I want to commend you for providing a balance to The Bulletin's tired and, as usual, biased coverage.

Love Thy Biker

So far in my experience, I have concluded that the Universe runs on Love. Who knows how many people would say that they have had that same experience? However, I feel that many people would say that the thought of the Universe running on Love makes them feel good.
