Little Bites: Cinco de Drinko

Cinco de Mayo is an odd holiday for gringos to celebrate. It would be a bit like Mexicans celebrating Gettysburg. In 1862, a very young General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín scored an unlikely defeat of the French troops at the Battle of Puebla, and helped turned back Napoleon III’s forces (which, really, what were they doingโ€ฆ

Lawmakers Back Medical Marijuana Again

The first time Crohn's Disease landed Jeff (not his real name) in the hospital, he was a freshman in high school. The next two days were a churn of vomiting and intense stomach cramping; eventually doctors and nurses inserted a flexible straw through his nose to purge stomach acids. “I remember thinking,” Jeff said, “whateverโ€ฆ

Blockbuster This Summer

In late March, I stepped into the Editor position at the Source and, in preparation, began looking for a house in Bend. I have owned homes in Portland, know what I like and also know the business end of a hammer. I wasn’t afraid of a fixer-upper, but also was hoping to find something nearโ€ฆ

Better than Before

Trending Now: Kindness

Maybe it is President Obama’s soothing voice as the Commander-in-Caring, or maybe we really are becoming nicer as a nation. But three years into the current decade, it certainly does seem as if the arc of history is bending noticeably toward kindness. Certainly, there are notable and horrible exceptions—the insanely cruel bombings at the Bostonโ€ฆ

Where Men Can Be Men

One hundred years ago the most popular men’s haircut was a tapered look—tight and clean on the sides and longer on top. For 20 cents men could look like Al Capone or Calvin Coolidge. Or Forrest Gump. And for the last 90 years, the Metropolitan Barber Shop on Wall Street has not only provided suchโ€ฆ

In reply to Use All You Want: When it comes to water rates, Bend has it wrong (Feature, 4/28) Having recently moved to Bend from drought-stricken areas, I'm a pro at water conservation. Terror on the Tooth

After covering nearly 3,500 vertical feet in a single 24-hour push, Chris Wright and Scott Adamson arrived at their first resting spot exhausted, cold, shaken and ready for sleep. It would prove elusive. The pair was attempting to camp on a ledge the size of a coffee table, their feet dangling into the void; dehydrationโ€ฆ

99 Percent Great

Mid-last decade, An Inconvenient Truth brought a surprising amount of mainstream attention to global warming. Even Al Gore has expressed shock that millions of people would tune into what is essentially a power point presentation about a scientific phenomena. But what is additional groundbreaking about An Inconvenient Truth—the 2006 Oscar winner for Best Documentary—is thatโ€ฆ

Cinco de Cinema

By the ’70s, as Hollywood kicked into high gear with commercial blockbusters like Jaws and Star Wars, to the south, Mexican cinema was going in another direction. High Culture, Low Cost

Wendy Bloom leads a threefold life. She is a mother of two young kids, 6-year-old Bobby and 2-year-old toddler Madeleine; in itself, that keeps her plenty busy. But she piles on more: By day, she is a network and systems engineer, working on computers for local school districts. And, finally, by night, the lanky, blondโ€ฆ

All That Glitters

A demure, grown-up Alice in Wonderland in a black dress and black boots, there’s something ethereal but a little bit racy about Eilen Jewell. Pronounced eye-lynn, even her name is just a bit off center. The 34-year-old bandleader is one part devilish Mississippi River bottom blues and one part sweet folk-singer on the stage inโ€ฆ
