Countdown to SWAYZE

Oh boy, oh boy. It is like the day before Christmas! All the screens are hung (James and I just perched on a 24 foot ladder to precariously hang a surprisingly heavy 16 foot screen). The beer is bought and neatly tucked into The Old Stone Church and, without a Blockbuster in sight, we haveโ€ฆ

Pacific Power in Standoff with Mirror Pond Management Board

The mood was TENSE in today’s Mirror Pond Management Board meeting as its members, one after another, put Pacific Power representative Angela Price on the spot. The meeting was originally arranged so that project manager Jim Figurski could share the results from the latest survey. But what followed could only be described as a standoffโ€ฆ

In the Bottle

Crux is now bottling, and three flavors are available at Newport Market, although already one was sold out. Nonetheless, it was the Insider IPA I was looking for, as a treat to bring to an after-work, porch-sitting chill-out session with two other guys. Served in single pint bottles, these are perfect serving sizes. The labelโ€ฆ

Gary’s No Quit Wit

On July 10, Bend beer drinkers will get to raise a pint of “Gary’s No Quit Wit,” Worthy Brewing’s latest creation, in honor of Bend living legend Gary Bonacker, Sunnyside Sports co-owner and mountain bike pioneer. Also, cancer fighter and creator of Tour des Chutes, a benefit ride he created. Ten years ago Bonacker wasโ€ฆ

Meet the Artist

In 1965, Andy Warhol created an image for Time magazine for an article called “Today’s Teen-Agers.” The iconic image ran on the cover. Warhol took the children of Time’s staffers to an arcade and posed them for portraits, assembling the photos into his signature color blocked pop-art collage style. The cover helped launch Warhol toโ€ฆ

Bike Town USA . . . Really?

City Councilor Victor Chudowsky always gets a prime parking spot out front of Thump Coffee in downtown Bend. That’s because parking at the popular café isn’t a problem. At least not for bike commuters. Rather than another conventional parallel car parking space, similar to those lining the rest of Minnesota Avenue, a string of fire-engineโ€ฆ

Our Picks 7/10 – 7/18

friday 12 Pink Martini OUTDOOR MUSIC—Most surprising about Pink Martini is how wholesome it is, a 21st century, postmodern version of the Carter Family (and/or Liberace). Borrowing from show tunes, Von Trapp classics and sparkly ditties, the music is highly proficient yet easily consumed, as effervescent as a flute of champagne. 6:30 pm. Les Schwabโ€ฆ

Media Salon Rides Again

On Monday evening, the Source hosted its third “Media Salon,” a monthly event where our editor, Phil Busse, goes all Oprah-like and Q&As with local experts. It is our attempt to bring our newspaper more to life, and to create a forum where readers can interact. You know, make our news reporting all relevant andโ€ฆ

Ichin’ for Stitchin’

The 38th annual Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show has 1,300 quilt entries. Ranging in size from 36 to 100 inches, entries total 6,128 feet of quilt—over a mile if you laid them end-to-end. Enough to solidly blanket (ah ha! quilt joke!) the entire town of Sisters, transforming every bare wall and exposed eve into a workโ€ฆ

The Legislative Class of 2013

The legislative session ended on Monday, and 2013’s class of legislators wasn’t the flashy group in recent history, but in a final sprint toward the finish line, they did manage to release $1 billion for important construction and education projects. Call these their “class gift”—some $600 million in capital projects and various spending for theโ€ฆ

Don’t Be A Dunderhead

I teach in Portland and, last weekend, one of my students received a phone message during a break between classes. When she returned, she was clearly shaken. Her girlfriend, a 22-year-old Reed College graduate like herself, had been in a bike accident. There wasn’t much information, but what was known was she had broken herโ€ฆ

One Day at a Time

MONDAY 1 Impossible as it may sound, some people are actually claiming that motherhood has changed howling seahag Kim Kardashian into a (what??) somewhat bearable person. “When I walked in to see her, Kim was holding the baby,” said unreliable witness and Pussycat Dolls founder Robin Antin to Us Weekly. “I said, ‘Oh, my god.โ€ฆ

Letters 7/3 – 7/11

Bear Creek's principal getting administrative leave These recent weeks we have seen society wake up to its double standards and bigotry, whether it is seeing a 11 year old boy as a second-class citizen because he cherishes one of the many cultures that coexist in this country or the casual use of the n-word toโ€ฆ

Tour Tech

Over the past year, cycling technology has seen great gains—from aerodynamic helmets that actually make riders faster, to sexy hydraulic rim road brakes that offer super modulation and stopping ease. Now that the Tour de France is well under way, the public is getting its first glimpse of the latest in tour tech. This week,โ€ฆ

Destroy All Monsters

“The audience needs to be invested in the difference between what you’re doing and something generic, and I would argue that most of the audience don’t know the difference between someone who I consider to be making ‘cinema’ and someone who’s not,” Steven Soderbergh recently told Empire, explaining his reasons for quitting directing. “That shit—thatโ€ฆ

Alone Aboard the Ark

Alone Aboard the Ark The Leisure Society Full Time Hobby Equally at home in a rural, blue-collar, cedar-planked Surrey pub as it is in a lively urban London ale house, the music of Britain’s The Leisure Society hits all the notes of traditional and modern British folk music. On the band's latest release, Alone Aboardโ€ฆ

The Everlasting Battle

Though the second Iraq war has largely wound down, U.S. involvement in Afghanistan is now in its 12th year. Meaning: Three of the members of Tumbleweed Wanderers were 10 when that war started and the other two were barely in puberty. From their perspective “peacetime” largely exists in history books. Such sensibility informs the lyrics.โ€ฆ

Street Heat

River floating, camping, hiking, pub cycling-the list of must-do Bend summertime activities is long, but not complete without adding one last thing—a Summerfest concert by flamenco guitarist Todd Haaby. Of course, there is a lot more than just music at Summerfest, but concerts are a big part of the annual downtown street fair. They’re alsoโ€ฆ

Transient Room Tax Resolution Passes

The Bend City Council put months of discussion to rest Wednesday night by passing the Transient Room Tax Resolution, 5-2. Voters will decide in November if the tax-rate on rooms should jump from 9 to 10.4 percent. The decision didnโ€™t come easily, though. After hearing support from several business figures in the community, council membersโ€ฆ
