The Lifestyle
Whether influenced by the popular television series, “Yellowstone,” or a need to get back to the basics, Cowboy Culture is seeing a revival throughout the U.S. In an ultra-automated world that moves at break-neck speed, people are craving the need to unplug as Western traditions of owning land and being self-sufficient have taken a front seat. Yes, it’s rodeo season, but the influence of western style is becoming increasingly popular no matter what time of year.
The Modern Ranch
Modern Farmhouse and Mountain Modern have had their moment, but the Modern Ranch is now in the spotlight. What does that look like in home style and finishes? Combining Americana with timeless SW design, Modern Ranch is a harmonious fusion of classic western interiors. Leather, cowhide, southwestern textiles, found pieces, natural earth tones, raw wood elements, classic terracotta and stone, cozy fireplaces, layers of texture and plenty of natural light. Rustic, yet refined with sprawling single-level floorplans and expansive patio spaces that make sense for accommodating big gatherings and lots of muddy cowboy boots.
Cowboy Capital of Oregon
There are hints of ranching influence all over Central Oregon, but if you are looking for authentic western charm, the laid-back town of Prineville offers an effortless blend of cowboy heritage and modern amenities. With a population just shy of 12,500, Prineville is the oldest incorporated city in Central Oregon, founded in 1868. The downtown scene gives off an unpretentious western vibe with locally owned boutiques, friendly coffee shops and excellent steak houses that can seat you on the weekend without a reservation.
During the summer months, visitors and locals enjoy the buzz of excitement leading up to the Crooked River Roundup, which is kicked off with a cattle drive being led through downtown by cowboys and cowgirls in full western attire, followed by the stampede block party and three days of rodeo action. A couple of weeks after the rodeo events wrap up, the horse race portion of the Crooked River Roundup begins — this year they will be celebrating 60 years of racing. Other summer activities include the Wings and Wheels car & airplane show at the Prineville Airport, holiday parades, a large rockhound show, the county fair with 4H/FFA auction, live music in the park, water sports at the two reservoirs nearby and many youth rodeo events.
But when the summer dust settles, the sweet little town of Prineville is still there, steady and dependable. Coffee drive-thrus have a line at the crack of dawn, horse trailers roll through downtown, locals wave you onto the highway in front of them, and the traditions of ranching and the western ways of life carry on. Whether you are looking for a quaint downtown cottage, a luxury ranch, or something in between, there are many opportunities for homeownership in the cowboy capital of Oregon. Come kick off your boots and stay a while.
