Unity4Inclusion honors the 10 year Anniversary of the Massacre in Sagamihara, Japan

Unity4Inclusion Founder and Board President Sam Robinson is going to host a memorial at the Central Oregon Collective in Bend, Oregon on July 25th, 2026 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm in honor of the massacre that took place at the Care Facility at Tsukui Yamayuri – en. Robinson would like to invite the Japanese Community and the disability community in Central Oregon to come and participate in this event.

This marks 10 years since the massacre took place at Tsukui Yamayuri-en, where a former employee sent a letter to the Japanese Parliament arguing that people with disabilities should be eliminated—an ideology adopted from Nazi Germany during World War II. This affected Japan Nationwide and the International Community.

The perpetrator, Satoshi Uematsu, broke into the care facility on July 26, 2016, killing 19 people and injuring 26, for a total of 45 victims. Robinson visited Japan in October of 2024 and paid his respects to those that were affected in the tragedy, Robinson said in his own words, “I was very angry and furious by what happened in Sagamihara and at Tsukui Yamayuri – en, I have done quite a bit of advocating in my community and I also love Japanese Culture.”

So, rather than stay angry I reached out to the facility director that I was sorry for those that lost their lives and I wanted to come and pay my respects and in his response come and visit Tsukui Yamayuri – en and I was able to, I hope to continue building relationships with Tsukui Yamayuri – en into the future.”

We would also like to recommend people to wear Black and Dark colors to keep within the tradition of Japan and we also like people to bring flowers and they are unable to then flowers will be provided at the Memorial.
