Endless Fantasy Anamanaguchi Dream.hax The 2013 version of music from a 1985 Nintendo Entertainment System—as conceived by Brooklyn chiptune rock band Anamanaguchi—packs a ton more oomph than the elementary bleeps and bloops that Mario saved Princess Toadstool to when we were kids. To create the electro-rock on its debut album Endless Fantasy, Anamanaguchi pipes live […]
Ethan Maffey
Both a writer and a fan of vinyl records since age 5, it wasn't until nearly three decades later that Oregon Native Ethan Maffey derived a plan to marry the two passions by writing about music. From blogging on MySpace in 2007 and then Blogspot, to launching his own website, 83Music, and eventually freelancing for publications in the Pacific Northwest, like Spokane’s alt-weekly Inlander, Ethan’s aim has been to provide fans of music alternatives to the mundane and overplayed. This included a nearly two year stint as the music editor for the Source, where he scoured the Bend music scene drawing attention to local talent and notable touring acts as they passed through town. In addition to deep knowledge of the local music scene, Ethan has an uncanny ability to quote lines from the television show “Friends.” He also has an eye for women’s fashion and feels a kinship with Lucky Day, Steve Martin’s character in ¡Three Amigos!
A (Sound) Bite of Cake
Members of Cake visit and post on their Webpage more frequently than a teenage girl—an endearing quirk for an established band, especially, in an age when the social media profiles of iconic bands are most often run by third-party entities like record labels and publicists. And for a band with left-leaning political views, the Sacramento […]
A Blank Canvas
The 2011 Sigur Rós film for the double live album Inni depicts the unconventional Icelandic rock band—known for an ethereal-sounding bow guitar—in antique black and white, using odd camera angles to generate ghostly imagery. Lead singer Jónsi Birgisson is more a falsetto specter than performer. Frame by frame, the resulting movie manifests as an hourlong […]

Budgetary Blues
Forget about passing a levy to overcome budget shortfalls. Sisters, Oregon, has a better-than-a-bake-sale approach to closing the education funding gap: live music. Since 1997, the Sisters Starry Nights concert series has used donated performances by top-notch musicians like Lyle Lovett, Kenny Loggins and Vince Gill to raise money for the Sisters Schools Foundation. On […]
Listen Local
When it comes to launching itself into the Bend music scene, wide-eyed indie rock quartet Isles has thrown conventional wisdom out the window. Other than performing a brief opening set at Parrilla Grill a few weeks ago and making a handful of First Friday Art Walk appearances, Isles has yet to play a legitimate gig. […]
