Destiny’s Child sang a song about them—independent women. And Central Oregon’s music scene has been benefiting from ladies like that for a while now. They command attention as stage performers, as business owners supporting local live music and as website developers aiming to connect music fans with new social media tools. It’s time their contributions […]
Ethan Maffey
Both a writer and a fan of vinyl records since age 5, it wasn't until nearly three decades later that Oregon Native Ethan Maffey derived a plan to marry the two passions by writing about music. From blogging on MySpace in 2007 and then Blogspot, to launching his own website, 83Music, and eventually freelancing for publications in the Pacific Northwest, like Spokane’s alt-weekly Inlander, Ethan’s aim has been to provide fans of music alternatives to the mundane and overplayed. This included a nearly two year stint as the music editor for the Source, where he scoured the Bend music scene drawing attention to local talent and notable touring acts as they passed through town. In addition to deep knowledge of the local music scene, Ethan has an uncanny ability to quote lines from the television show “Friends.” He also has an eye for women’s fashion and feels a kinship with Lucky Day, Steve Martin’s character in ¡Three Amigos!
Hail to the Chief
The keg of GoodLife Brewing Compnay’s special edition honey porter—made from a recipe used by chefs at the White House—was tapped at 5 p.m. Friday night. Fifty minutes later, it was empty. But the dining room of GoodLife remained packed for the next hour plus as Bend’s indie-alt-pop-rock band Wilderness absolutely killed it. Yes—all those […]
Mutual Friends
Mutual Friends BOY Nettwerk Records The debut album Mutual Friends from European duo BOY is the musical equivalent of a chick flick. Not the obvious kind of tomfoolery like How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, but more like the lighthearted seriousness of The Notebook. OK, I know way too much about these movies. […]

From there relive the era of acid wash jeans with “Don’t Save Me,” a modern take on '80s pop from Haim. Travel to the land of forgotten Canadian alt-rock with Montreal’s Unicorns and its 2004 song “I […]
Shark Attack
The cover of Brooklyn electronic music artist Eliot Lipp’s 2012 album depicts a shark eating a wolf eating a rabbit eating a snake. The carnage seems to be the perfect metaphor for his approach to the music industry. Be the eater—not the eaten. And In this equation, being the shark means constructing imaginative beats that […]
Listen Local
I know we write a lot about bluegrass. But it's popular right now for a reason—people like to get rowdy and listen to good stuff while they do. It doesn’t hurt that whiskey is tasty. I mean, no writer is talking about music you can sip vodka to now are they? So, it doesn't hurt […]
