Big time bummer. Aesop Rock cancels his show in Bend.
Ethan Maffey
Both a writer and a fan of vinyl records since age 5, it wasn't until nearly three decades later that Oregon Native Ethan Maffey derived a plan to marry the two passions by writing about music. From blogging on MySpace in 2007 and then Blogspot, to launching his own website, 83Music, and eventually freelancing for publications in the Pacific Northwest, like Spokane’s alt-weekly Inlander, Ethan’s aim has been to provide fans of music alternatives to the mundane and overplayed. This included a nearly two year stint as the music editor for the Source, where he scoured the Bend music scene drawing attention to local talent and notable touring acts as they passed through town. In addition to deep knowledge of the local music scene, Ethan has an uncanny ability to quote lines from the television show “Friends.” He also has an eye for women’s fashion and feels a kinship with Lucky Day, Steve Martin’s character in ¡Three Amigos!
One of a Kind
To the untrained eye, most independent record stores seem the same. Retail space is largely allocated to compact discs and used DVDs, with a much smaller area reserved for vinyl record sales. Many stores host live performances by local bands or touring artists—although some do it with more frequency than others. Typically, the main difference […]
Concert Wish List
I spend a ton of time listening to music at home—much of it on my turntable. It’s a great way to experience a lot of what’s out there. Spending quality time with an album allows me to unlock the lyrics of the songs, discover nuances in the instrumentation and generally figure out my response to […]
Much More than Funk
I, for one, hate applying labels to bands. After all, these days, almost no band follows in the footsteps of a singular genre. Typically, bands are a mash of sounds they’ve fallen in love with or have been exposed to dating back to the time they were kids. That can lead to an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach […]
Music of the Gods
Concept albums aren’t only for art-pop or hip-hop; they’re for singer-songwriters, too. For proof, listen to the trilogy of albums by Manchester Orchestra in which front man Andy Hull based all the songs on a 17th century sailor. For New York singer Dar Williams, her concept album comes by way of her ninth studio release, […]

What Did You Expect?
Reunion tours are a tricky thing. Indie rock favorites Pavement attempted one in 2010 after a decade apart, with most reviews of the shows striking a positive note. Still, their Sasquatch Festival set nearly turned disastrous when front man Steve Malkmus—who was, apparently, completely tossed—got pretty angry with his band mates on stage. This resulted […]
Other 2012 Best Of
