Get ready for the holiday with music!
Ethan Maffey
Both a writer and a fan of vinyl records since age 5, it wasn't until nearly three decades later that Oregon Native Ethan Maffey derived a plan to marry the two passions by writing about music. From blogging on MySpace in 2007 and then Blogspot, to launching his own website, 83Music, and eventually freelancing for publications in the Pacific Northwest, like Spokane’s alt-weekly Inlander, Ethan’s aim has been to provide fans of music alternatives to the mundane and overplayed. This included a nearly two year stint as the music editor for the Source, where he scoured the Bend music scene drawing attention to local talent and notable touring acts as they passed through town. In addition to deep knowledge of the local music scene, Ethan has an uncanny ability to quote lines from the television show “Friends.” He also has an eye for women’s fashion and feels a kinship with Lucky Day, Steve Martin’s character in ¡Three Amigos!
Successful Failure
Singer Ed Thanhouser has a great deal to say, and not just with the music he writes and records with a merry band of artistic collaborators as Ed & The Red Reds. The most notable morsel resulting from his compulsion to share is without a doubt, his latest EP, The Liar’s Dream, a warm and […]
All Work and No Play is Not the Human Way
Humans are the perfect blend of the ant and the grasshopper. Our summers are filled with hard work during the day, but by late afternoon we swing lazily from hammocks and suck blended drinks through straws. Of course, some of us are more ant than others. Well, toiling ant, get ready to dance to the […]
River Rim Coffeehouse Changes Owners and Name
New owners for south Bend coffee shop. Same great music.

Stay Gold First Aid Kit | Columbia Records Swedish sister duo First Aid Kit has a very peculiar way of crafting classical sounding American country tunes despite calling Scandinavia home. The third studio album from Johanna and Klara Söderberg, Stay Gold, out this week, continues their nod to tradition born out of influences that include […]
Happy Hours Are Here Again
For a town that needs little more than a clock striking five o’clock (or, really, the noon hour whistle) as a reason to raise pint glasses of craft brews with friends, Bend residents still scheme an awful lot to justify even more sipping—or chugging—of the town’s central export. The crowning jewel of these schemes is […]
The Art of Growing Up
If the meticulously crafted sound of art rock maven St. Vincent is the equivalent of a measured stroll through the Louvre in Paris, then the wildly aggressive baroque music of Phoenix band Emby Alexander sounds more like an ill-supervised field trip of feral urchins scattered through the museum’s halls with abandoned wonder. And, in much […]
It’s in the Music
Either Provo, Utah, band Desert Noises willfully chooses not to share too much during interviews or the only way lead singer Kyle Henderson and his bandmates actually know how to express themselves is through harmony laden, dusty rock tracks with boyish themes and seasoned chops. Alright, there could be a third option: the band’s publicist […]
