UGB is a Recipe for Sprawl

This week's letter comes from former city councilor John Schubert who
asks a question that's been on a lot of people's minds lately: "What's
with the massive urban growth boundary expansion proposal?"
An
advocate of smart growth and alternative transportation planning,
Schubert questions whether the city's past subsidies to the building
community have led to the current fiscal crisis in Bend. Thanks for the
letter, John. You can claim your prize for this week's winning letter
at the Source headquarters, 704 NW Georgia.
I recently I flew from Frankfurt, Germany to Moscow and marveled at how
clearly the land use patterns unfolded below me. Compact town led to
open agricultural land led to forest land, and then the pattern
repeated, over and over, mile after mile. No rural sprawl as in
Deschutes County; no fuzzy boundary between city and farmland as in
Bend; no homes in the forest. Later in the trip I remarked on my flight
observations to a German acquaintance I met. I asked why he thought
this was so. Without a second hesitation, he said, "It is most
certainly because to do anything else is incredibly wasteful of
government money and natural resources."

Imperialism 101

In preparing a nation for war, imperial war leaders have to create a
visible and highly charged emotional sense of injustice and
righteousness to secure national cohesion. Their challenge is to
overcome the natural human opposition to early death and the
destruction of civilian life.
The need to invent a cause for war
is especially important with imperialist countries, because their
national territory is not under threat. There is no visible occupation
army oppressing the people in their everyday life nor does the "enemy"
disrupt normal life.
The task of imperial rulers is to fabricate
a world in which the enemy to be attacked is portrayed as an "invader"
or "aggressor." Since all US imperial wars are fought overseas - far
from any immediate threats, attacks or invasions - US imperial rulers
have the special task of making the reasons for war immediate, dramatic
and self-righteously defensive.

Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli: Over the River and Through the Woods at 2nd Street Theater

I’ve fallen and I can’t find my grandparents. Oh wait, there they are.In Italian, the expression "Tengo Famiglia" means more than just its
literal translation of "I hold family." The expression, as writer Joe
DiPietro (author of I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change) shows
throughout the production, is more about putting your family first.
Even though DiPietro's play focuses on an Italian-American family
living in Hoboken, New Jersey, the overall theme of the play transcends
cultural boundaries and appeals to the audience. The cast and crew at
2nd Street Theater give this heartwarming comedy about family, food and
faith legs and the story itself does the rest.

The Real Campaign Starts Now

For new Oregon State head basketball coach Craig Robinson, helping his
brother-in-law win the presidency of the United States is going to seem
like a piece of cake compared to trying to win a Pac 10 conference
basketball game this season - let alone a championship.

Robinson -
Michelle Obama's brother - inherited a team that went 0-18 in
conference play last season and won only six of the 31 games it played.
Unfortunately for the Beavers last year, they weren't able to give a
concession speech mid-way through the season when they realized the
race was over.

Last week in this very column we discussed the geographical idiosyncrasies of the hip-hop world, specifically the influx of dope-ass rhymes emanating from the Bay Area. But this week, we're spinning the globe a bit to the right to take a look at the Midwest, which has long had a bustling indie hip-hop scene going down.

Keller telling us Why we need to wake up early. Sound Check wasn't quite sure what to expect from Keller Williams with Moseley, Droll and Sipe when the all-star quartet took the stage at the Domino Room last Wednesday (11/12). We'd put a few solo Keller shows under our belt over the years, but had never seen him in full band mode…other than a brief appearance with the String Cheese Incident a few years back. Needless to say…we were more than pleased.

For Britt and Lia, From Bend: Local bands and community members throw benefit show.

If you need a reason to hit up this benefit, just look above. The news of the gruesome attack on Bendites Britt Leis and Lia Koehn

If you need a reason to hit up this benefit, just look above. The news of the gruesome attack on Bendites Britt Leis and Lia Koehn as they traveled through Ecuador didn't take long to spread through town. The details of the assault were outlined in national news reports and now, weeks later, talk of Leis' miraculous survival has since been a steady topic around town, even though most residents had never met the two.

While Leis survived the more than 20 stab wounds he incurred during the attack, his path to recovery will likely be a long one, and the medical costs for his care (which included being airlifted back to California, where he continues to receive care) are nothing less than staggering. What happened to Leis and Koehn is a tragedy, but the response from the community has been refreshing, especially the reaction from Bend's music community.

Testing the Laugh Formula: Even children using profanity can’t save Role Models

And that, boys, is why you wouldn’t last five minutes in Sturgis. In the recently ended political season, there was a comment much
dissected and analyzed having to do with lipstick on a pig. I am trying
hard to forget the context, but watching Role Models this unfortunate
image came roaring back at me.

I suspect Judd Apatow is responsible
in large part for the new comedy genre, which created the following
formula: relentless amounts of crudeness, the raunchier the better,
followed by an awakened heart, followed by a gauzy enlightenment. And
in capable hands, it works. You get potty humor and leave the theater
feeling good about the world. We're going to make it, man.

A temporary resurrection. Soul Men is Bernie Mac's last movie; that alone lends his portrayal of an over-the-hill backup soul singer an eerie undertone. Coupled with the passing of Isaac Hayes (playing himself), this comedy could prove a real tearjerker for some and there is a fitting tribute done via clips of interviews and outtakes during the ending credits. But the meat of the movie, which was directed by Malcolm D Lee, (Undercover Brother) is an old and simple story. Two old friends are reunited for one last hurrah, with some road trip hijinks mixed in.
