Phil Busse
Phil Busse has done his tour of duty with alt-weeklies, starting in 1992 right after graduation from Middlebury College as the first environmental beat reporter for San Francisco Weekly. After a brief detour through the University of Oregon School of Law, Phil returned to writing as the first Managing Editor for Portland Mercury. In 2006, he started the Media Institute for Social Change in Portland, through which he continues to host a summer program teaching college students to produce documentaries.
Until he was 25 or so, Phil thought that he would be a spy, and took scuba lessons to prepare, and learned to drive a motorcycle and an 18-wheeler. Perhaps, then, it is unsurprising that his favorite holiday is the Fourth of July (he loves blowing stuff up). He feels at home with Joseph Conrad's fictional characters.
PICK: Elton John tribute
TRIBUTEโIn 1977, Elton John pulled a Michael Jordan and announced he was retiring at the top of his gameโwhich would have been fine. The 1970s were Elton Johnโs best workโfun, smart, catchy dittiesโand this is the period of time that Kenny Metcalf, Elton John impersonator extraordinaire, pulls from. 8 pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall. […]

Movie Review: Polanski’s Venus in Fur
Passing the Audition Domination and Power in Polanski’s Venus in Fur By Ned Lannamann Roman Polanskiโs new film is set in a Paris theater, with a cast of two. Thomas (Mathieu Amalric) is wrapping up auditions for his new play when Vanda (Emmanuelle Seigner) comes out the rain. She’s coarse and slatternlyโthe exact opposite of […]
Movie Review: Into the Storm
Sturm und Dad Into the Storm: A Movie That Features Fire Tornadoes by Ben Coleman There is a school of thought that all stories can be categorized into one of three conflicts: Man against Man, Man against Society, and Video Bloggers against Tornado. Into the Storm fits solidly into that last category. Hot widower Richard […]
PICK: Shook Twins (Munch & Music)
Shook Twins MUSICโToo sexy and smirky snarky to be earnest folk singers, and too cute and full of sunshine for a full court press of Goth music, the Shook Twins are crafting their own styleโcompositions with warbling guitars, plucky banjos and increasingly complex harmonization. Second to last Munch and Music for the season. 5:30 pm. […]
PICK: (Summer’s) Last Alive After Five
MUSICโWith a remarkable background as a songwriter for R&B superstars like The OโJays and The Temptations, LeRoy Bell is equally impressive as the frontman for his own band, His Only Friends. A great ending for the Alive After 5 summer series, LeRoy Bell soft peddles soul music with a surprising result: It is infectiously fun […]
Editor’s Note: What to expect in this week’s issue
Even as recently as a decade ago, car sharing most commonly meant lending your car keys to a buddy. Or, perhaps visiting a new town, you would stay in a friendโs friendโs spare room. But that sentiment has grown stridently from a quaint, modernday sense of community to a $25 billion a year โsharingโ economyโand, […]
Pounding the Dirt
There are certain climbs in marathons reportedly so tough that they take on monikers, like Boston’s famed “Heartbreak Hill,” a steady climb that gains roughly 100 feet over a mile. It is a spot legendary for stopping runners in their tracks. But taken in context, that climb seems a lot like the same east coast […]
