Phil Busse
Phil Busse has done his tour of duty with alt-weeklies, starting in 1992 right after graduation from Middlebury College as the first environmental beat reporter for San Francisco Weekly. After a brief detour through the University of Oregon School of Law, Phil returned to writing as the first Managing Editor for Portland Mercury. In 2006, he started the Media Institute for Social Change in Portland, through which he continues to host a summer program teaching college students to produce documentaries.
Until he was 25 or so, Phil thought that he would be a spy, and took scuba lessons to prepare, and learned to drive a motorcycle and an 18-wheeler. Perhaps, then, it is unsurprising that his favorite holiday is the Fourth of July (he loves blowing stuff up). He feels at home with Joseph Conrad's fictional characters.
PICK: Ringo Starr
Fifty years after the Beatles re-invented what it means to be a rock-and-roll band, Ringo Starr has emerged as the least likely of the Fab Four to be the most relevant and enduring musician of the group; yet there he is, still more a band member than a front man, but pounding away with 15 […]
PICK: Alive After 5 Heart by Heart
Fresh off their Hall of Face induction (in 2013), Heart is touring again. Well, members of the original band…bassist Steve Fossen and original Heart drummer Mike Derosier. With 20 Top 40 hits, they have ingrained their songs so deeply into your brain over the decades that you probably donโt even realize that you already know […]
On Top of the World
World of Water is hundreds of miles from the ocean, but stepping into the cluttered and busy front office, it feels just a few steps from a Santa Monica surf beach. Lynette Remund is talking on the phone to a customer. “You’ll send over the EKG,” she says, somewhat cryptically, and then adds, “and yes, […]
Like Snow Skiing, But Warmer!
The two happiest days of a boat owner, I was once told, are the day you buy the boat, and the day you sell it. I disagree. The happiest days of a boat owner should be the days inbetween buying it and selling it (or, in the case of my last waterski boat, when it […]
Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe Recommends
Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe is, of course, great access for rentals and direct access to the Deschutes River, and is known for their free Wednesday evening summer concert series, Pickin’ & Paddlin’. But it is not all Deschutes River for Bend’s paddle board mecca. James Fredericks, Manager for Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe, recently […]
Cast Your Rod
When fishermen from around the world are traveling hundreds of miles for just a weekend—just a few days!—to fish Central Oregon’s famous lakes, really, driving 30 minutes doesn’t seem like that big of a deal. With postcard perfect backgrounds and diverse challenges, the lakes here are a fisherman’s playground. Crane Prairie Reservoir The Deschutes River […]
The restaurant formerly known as Angel Thai
The name change for Orchid Thai along the outer reaches of downtown Bend does not seem to mean a décor change—it is still paper umbrellas, fake flowers, and delicate Asian artwork. Nor has the menu seemed to change much—which isn’t really good or bad; just something in-between. The menu seems to be essentially the same […]
PICK: Horse racing!
Our advice: Always bet on a horse to place. Donโt go for all the money, or for the fancy bets. So much better than Kentucky Derby or bigtime racing, this is horse racing where you can stand feet from the horses and smell the . . um, victory. First post at 7:15 pm. Crook County […]
Movie Recommendation: Sharknado!
Sharknado is exactly what it sounds likeโฆTOTALLY AWESOMEBy Brianna Brey Have you ever wished for a fictional natural disaster so deadly, so dangerous, so filled with sharp, toothy goodness that it strikes fear in the hearts of Galeophobes? Look no further than Sharknado, a Syfy made for TV movie about a man, his estranged family, […]
