While there are no car chases and seemingly the only cinematic event in the last year not starring Matthew McConaughey, this simult-cast is a highly delicious event, bringing a near four-hour performance from one of the best operas in the world by the gold standard of Italian opera to Central Oregon. Sat., April 5, 9:55 […]
Phil Busse
Phil Busse has done his tour of duty with alt-weeklies, starting in 1992 right after graduation from Middlebury College as the first environmental beat reporter for San Francisco Weekly. After a brief detour through the University of Oregon School of Law, Phil returned to writing as the first Managing Editor for Portland Mercury. In 2006, he started the Media Institute for Social Change in Portland, through which he continues to host a summer program teaching college students to produce documentaries.
Until he was 25 or so, Phil thought that he would be a spy, and took scuba lessons to prepare, and learned to drive a motorcycle and an 18-wheeler. Perhaps, then, it is unsurprising that his favorite holiday is the Fourth of July (he loves blowing stuff up). He feels at home with Joseph Conrad's fictional characters.
Adrift in a Sea of Speculation
Early Thursday morning, a crane appeared at the contested dam. It was the latest indicator that, in case anyone was questioning, the dam is broken. Large steel plates were placed, like giant bandaids, by Pacific Power over the leaks, in what increasingly seems like an uphill (downstream?) battle to patch up the aging dam, and […]
Look! On the Golf Course. It’s a Surfboard? It’s a Golf Cart?
It sounds like a riddle perhaps overheard at the X-Games: What does international surf star Laird Hamilton have in common with golf? At first consideration, these two sports seem as far apart as Waikiki and Whispering Pines; one celebrating the endless summer of youth and a certain awe for the thundering wildness, while the other […]
TEDxBend . . one of last year’s best talks
Yes, watching on your computer is pretty great. Being there in person is mindblowing. One of last year TEDxBend highlights:
TEDxBend . . one of last year’s best talks
Yes, last year’s TEDxBend was great; this year is even bigger!
TEDxBend . . .a reminder why to be excited! Portland Cello Project
Time is ticking away, and there are only so many tickets for the TEDxBend. And, a reminder, it isn’t all talk-talk-talking:
TEDxBend . . .a reminder why to be excited!
What, you haven’t bought your ticket for TEDxBend yet? Do you not remember how great last year was?
Kiss Me/With Every Heartbeat
Presented by Stars and Rainbows, Kiss Me/With Every Heartbeat is a well-paced family rom-dram. Slightly less steamy than a Swedish bathhouse (just slightly), the story trundles along the star-crossed love affair of Frida and Mia, two young attractive women who, whoops, meet at their respective parent’s engagement party; that is, they are destined to become […]
Could Redmond be the Next “It” Town?
Last Saturday, bathed in crisp springtime sunshine, Redmond hosted its first city-sanctioned St. Patrick’s Day party. The main grid that runs along Fifth and Sixth Street, and traces out a Norman Rockwell-quaint downtown, was bustling with residents young and less young. Several men in kilts wandered on the street, presumably members of the High Desert […]
TEDxBend tickets on sale. . .yes, better rush!
TEDxBend, the annual carnival ride of inspiration and information, is doing something pretty cool this year: Sponsor a student. When you buy your ticket – which I’d recommend doing today, as this event may/will sell-out – you also can buy a ticket to sponsor a high school student to attend. That’s right: Play it forward […]
