Out of Town 5/18 – 5/26: Eisley, Shawn Mullins, Lauryn Hill, Sheryl Crow

Heading to Eugene or Portland? Here are a few bands worth checking out if you’re Out of Town.

portland
friday 20
Eisley
After listening to Eisley's new album, The Valley, from front to back, the Texas-based band, comprised of four DuPree siblings and one of their cousins, plays melodic indie rock that is both heartfelt and soulful. Their songs feature the beautiful vocal melodies of sisters Stacy and Sherri and their new single, “Smarter,” has an addictive beat, smart lyrics and soulful vocals. 9pm, Wonder Ballroom.
saturday 21 & monday 23
Shawn Mullins
It's been said Shawn Mullins hasn't been able to live up to his hit single “Lullaby,” but those people likely haven't heard his newer material on 2010's Light You Up. The album's title single has a smooth and infectiously melodic sound and may be one of the best of Mullins' career. 8pm, Aladdin Theater.

This Bill Is a Killer

Conservatives just don't like speed limits.

Conservatives just don't like speed limits. Along with anti-smoking laws, motorcycle helmet laws and seat belt laws, they see them as another manifestation of the detested “nanny state” that's always looking over their shoulders and wagging a disapproving finger.
When Republicans took over Congress in the 1990s, one of their first moves was to repeal the national 55-mile-per-hour speed limit imposed in 1974 by the Jimmy Carter Administration. That left the setting of speed limits up to the states. Since then, Republicans across the country have been crusading to get speed limits increased – or better yet, eliminated.

There is a cougar in Deschutes River Woods, maybe two, trying to make a living. DRW has a significant population of prey species making it good pickings for a large cat. Cougars have been hunting in the area for millennia.
Cougars are generally solitary animals, shy of human activities, and deathly afraid of dogs. They use stealth and cunning to acquire their food. When a cougar invades a residential area, most likely it has not yet learned to avoid humans and dogs. Which would indicate it is young and immature. If two cougars a traveling together they are most likely siblings recently run out of their mother's territory.

What About Don Corleone?

What the world needs is more Donald Ducks and Donald O’Conners and Don Drysdales and Don Juans and fewer Donald Trumps.

I have read recently that the top five names for boys in the U.S.A. are: Jacob, Ethan, Michael, Jayend and William. Donald does not appear anywhere in the top five, nor in the top ten list. As a Donald myself, I find that very disturbing. I believe that the current unpopularity of the name Donald is directly attributable to Mr. Trump of the same first name.

Less is More: Stepping into the barefoot – or almost barefoot – running fad

Taking a look at minimalist running shoes that are making big headway in the running world.

I admit it; I've always been a slow runner. A few years ago in the Dual in the Desert duathalon, I was beaten by every man, woman and child who showed up that day except for two women that were chatting as they walked the final leg of the course. And they were gaining on me.
I've made some improvements since that day, thankfully. I often run the river trails and Shevlin Park, enjoying the solitude and the challenge of running on trails. Recently I saw a man running at Shevlin with shoes that looked like chimpanzee feet. They were big, brown and had five toes. As he passed (OK, I'm still pretty slow) I asked about the shoes.

Central Oregon's Running Groups

Don’t want to run alone? These people will let you run with their running group in Bend.

Certain types of people are lone wolves when it comes to running. They prefer to, huff and puff in private. Then there are those who are driven by the pitter-patter of feet running along next to them. For some, group running satisfies a need to chitchat mid-run, and for others being surrounded by other people reminds them of being in a race and pushes them into that faster minute/mile group. No matter what motivates you, there are plenty of groups to join in Bend, on basically every day of the week. Now, there's no excuse for you not to hit the ground running.
