Hey, don't stop with the BOOT to Greg Walden and his evil GOP cronies (the Koch Brothers party) for wanting to defund Planned Parenthood. They have every intention of destroying even more: PBS and the EPA, just to name two. There are a lot of petitions circulating on the Internet that need to be signed against this idiocy. Spend a little time with a two year old and see all the great programming there is for little people on PBS. Did you know that you can find every single NPR radio station programmed into your route map on MapQuest if you are on a road trip?

A Very Special Episode
Ladies and gentlemen, set your DVR and/or Betamax to “record,” because this coming Tuesday (Feb 22) is a “very special episode” of Glee! (Record scratch.) “Hold on there, Wm.โข Steven Hump-Me!” I hear you cry. “Isn't every episode of Glee a 'very special episode?'” Well… okay! You have a point! Glee is basically the Blossom of this millennium – except with more explicit teen sex, gay bullying, and addictions to unnecessary mash-ups.
Tea For Fun?
Those who have found themselves buying three “beef” chalupas after a rough night always have a theory as to how their liver deceived them.
The schoolyard chant, “Beer before liquor, never sicker; liquor before beer, never fear” might be best left in the Kappa Kappa Delta house. If you've been drinking vodka all night, is it suicidal to have a Scotch nightcap? Is your liver really so devious that it considers a Long Island iced tea a complete insult and as such will get you back the next day?
Owen Hart – Earth Control
While some kids are punching out the lenses of their mom's ridiculous '80s glasses to add irony to their wardrobe, Tacoma's Owen Hart picks and chooses the best of metal from ages ago on its debut album, Earth Control – and not for irony's sake.
The band isn't reinventing the wheel here, but that's not what matters. It's more important to note that Owen Hart somehow sandwiches speed metal, thrash, hardcore and death metal together – a combo that would be easy to screw up – on Earth Control.
Our Picks for 2/16 – 2/24: Y La Bamba, Bend WinterFest, Golden Gloves Championship, Zwicklemania and more
Y La Bamba

One of the bloggers over on our brand-cranking-new Bent blog has been raving about this show for a while now and we have to agree, this is a really excellent band. Cramming seven members onto the stage, this Portland act manages to weave a few Mexican influences and numbers into its incredibly smooth indie folk sound. Think of a slightly spicier Blind Pilot and you've got this band. Free. 7pm. McMenamins Old St. Francis School
Fidelity's New Skyline Deal Deserves Scrutiny
When is a deal not a deal? Apparently when one of the parties to the agreement is an out-of-state landowner that controls more than 33,000 acres of forest outside Bend's backdoor. At least that's what we can glean from the recent behind-the-scenes negotiations that have been going on between Fidelity National Timber Resources and a host of other stakeholders that supported a compromise deal two years ago to trade some limited residential and resort development on the northwest end of the roughly 100-square-mile forest that sits between Bend and Sisters.

Bloody Cairo: At least 297 people have been killed in Egypt's anti-government uprising, according to Human Rights Watch … Must've been a slow news day: Glenn Beck rips into Super Bowl players for not standing with their hands over their hearts when Christina Aguilera sang the National Anthem. This reporter had both hands over his ears … More scary Mayan Calendar stuff: Reported shark attacks worldwide were up 25% in 2010; shark expert calls it “hugely unusual” … Getting off easy: Prosecutors say no charges will be filed against Lindsay Lohan for allegedly swiping a $2,500 necklace from a jewelry store.

Population Bill Has Come Due
Your February 3rd issue contained two of the best letters to any editor that I have read since moving to Bend last June. Carlos Wysling and Vanessa Schulz nailed the roots of their arguments by analyzing the big picture, something many people seem incapable of doing, especially when such an analysis results in conclusions that seem to threaten their perceived individualism or income. Mr. Wysling addressed the enormous cost of U.S. imperialism, and Ms. Schulz discussed our nation's war on wildlife on behalf of them good ol' cowboys and their almighty cattle.
For the past few decades, our nation has put its environmental efforts into mitigating the effects of ecologic disruption rather than confronting the ultimate foundation of those problems. This is also the pattern for modern medicine, where pushing pills to counteract the effects of body imbalances has taken precedence over eliminating the causes of those imbalances with exercise and good nutrition. We think that we can avoid societal difficulties by dealing with the edges of the big problems rather than tackling their collective tap root and taking an honest look in the mirror.
A Lesson in Love
Valentine's Day is this week! Which is why I'm taking this opportunity to advise you on what you're doing WRONG in your romantic relationships. Just think of me like Dr. Phil – except I'm not pear-shaped, I don't wear a pedophile mustache, I don't talk like Deputy Dawg, I don't offer people the absolute worst advice in the world, and, generally speaking, I'm not a despicable human being who deserves to be kicked in the junk, trampled by bulls, and shot out of a cannon into the feces-filled heinie-hole of Ann Coulter. [Insider tip: I DON'T LIKE DR. PHIL VERY MUCH.]
