Wolf Poachers, Truth in Advertising, Free Beer and Trump

Wolves and The Wild, Wild East
Well it was only a matter of time. Like a right-wing nut job who actually believes all vitriol that is dished up on a.m. radio and decides to do something about it with a gun in hand or a bomb in the trunk, some coward slunk into the woods of Eastern Oregon, put a rifle to his shoulder and illegally shot a gray wolf, one of the less than 20 that have been documented in the state of Oregon since the federal wolf recovery plan was launched two decades ago. Federal wildlife agents reportedly found the slain wolf, a young male member of the Wenaha pack that had only recently been fitted with a radio collar, on Sept. 30 in a remote area of the Umatilla National Forest. News of the find leaked out late last week when federal wildlife officials confirmed the find to the Associated Press. Conservation Organizations were quick to condemn the shooting, which comes on the heels of a contentious summer for wolf politics in Oregon where several livestock killings prompted state officials to issue kill permits for a pair of wolves believed responsible.

Dallas Is the Man for Deschutes

I write in support of an energetic, intelligent and knowledgeable candidate for Deschutes County Commissioner – Dallas Brown. Dallas has a deep understanding of the government, having worked with officials at local, state and federal agencies. He knows that the role of government is to serve all the people equally and justly, not to cater to special interests. A good commissioner needs to know how local government in Oregon works and this is something Dallas understands in depth.

Ready To Polish His Brass Balls

Regarding the Boot, (9-29), I want to thank the Source for this dubious honor. And in the spirit in which it has been offered, I accept this award. It was described in some detail as “two large, highly polished brass spheres mounted on a walnut base,” but alas, as it “isn't finished yet,” I look forward to its completion and presentation.

Homebrew Rules Defy Common Sense

After reading last week's Opinion-The Mailbox “The OLCC Still Doesn't Get It,” I felt compelled to chime in on a related issue. As the Source printed several months ago, the Oregon home brewers are having their freedoms trampled on due to a recent OLCC/OR DOJ interpretation of an archaic liquor law. This has effectively forced Oregon's home brewers (and vintners) to keep their creations locked into the confines of their own households, with any off premise travel being prohibited, and punishable as a misdemeanor.

A lovely Virginia road a weekend ago, autumn leaves exploding, the terror of cop lights flashing ahead. Thinking they'd finally found me and wishing my dog Stu a swell life after I'm arrested, the signs became clear: “Thank God for Dead Soldiers” and “God Hates Fags.” Westboro Baptist Church had arrived, protesting a hero's funeral at the Williamsburg Community Chapel, somehow equating dead soldiers with their own (thus God's) disapproval of homosexuality in America. This flock is clearly lost, not in Kansas anymore, Virginia that day then D.C. to defend their 1st Amendment rights this week.

New Trail Opportunities Abound: Making new trail connections on the eve of the Big Fat Tour

COTA is stoked to announce that several new trails in the Wanoga Complex will be open this fall.

COTA is stoked to announce that several new trails in the Wanoga Complex will be open this fall. Due to a very productive trail work season, especially with the great turnout for the Steve Larsen and Bend Dental Group Work event last weekend in which 68 people turned up to work for four hours on these two trails, we have been able to complete a new trail, which is part of a link from Tiddlywinks Trail, over to Edison Snow Park. This new connector trail is called Kiwa Butte trail, named after the butte it climbs.

My Multiple Wives

There is a case to be made for and against polygamy. THE CASE FOR: (1) Sex. Duh. And lots of it. Say you decided to have 24 wives instead of one: Now, Iโ€™m no โ€œarithmetician,โ€ but if Iโ€™m not mistaken, 24 wives = 24 times the sex.

Say you decided to have 24 wives instead of one: Now, I'm no “arithmetician,” but if I'm not mistaken, 24 wives = 24 times the sex. Unless your wives are like my ex, Mrs. Wm.โ„ข Steven Humphrey #1 – then it's more like -17 times the sex.

Jรคger Shots for 21-Year-Olds Everywhere!

The 21st birthday is the only occasion when even teetotalers hand their kids a 50-dollar bill and tell them to have the time of their lives. It's a day that most 21-year-olds have only a vague memory of, usually only because of a faint facial scar or a fake tooth they acquired during the celebration. It is the last rite of passage for adults in this country and definitely the most celebrated. Now you can drive, vote and drink in a bar. The freshly minted 21-year-old is fearless, with bright eyes and a shit-eating grin that screams: “I'm 21 and ready to take over the world!”
