Off The Groomed: Where to ski without groomed tracks and crowds

Thereโ€™s often a certain lemming-like quality to cross country skiers. They tend to go only where there are machine-groomed tracks and, as a result, crowds.

There's often a certain lemming-like quality to cross country skiers. They tend to go only where there are machine-groomed tracks and, as a result, crowds. There are alternatives, however, for those who enjoy solitude and happen to own a pair of general off-track touring skis.
If you're in the mood for a more traditional (read: un-tracked) tour, here's a guide to several places where, if the snow is good (read: deep), the skiing is worthwhile. You'll have the added bonus of running across some wildlife, or at least a few signs that forest dwellers are out and about in the snow.

Snow Removal: The city of Bend sends a mixed message

It’s tough to keep your sidewalks clear in Bend when snowplows keep covering them up.

OK, so we all know that the City of Bend has an obscure ordinance that says we citizens should clear our sidewalks within 24 hours of a major snow dump. Fine, I can live with that, and have for the past 33 winters, and I suspect that no one has ever been fined for not clearing his or her sidewalks in a timely fashion.

Duckorama: The dream of an epic BCS title game

The Oregon Ducks football squad is exciting everyone, not just old fans, and could be part of an epic BCS championship game.

Against the Gear Gurus: When it's the equipment that counts, not the experience

If you believe the numerous outdoor gear sites, self-appointed gear guru bloggers and outdoor magazine “test” stories and annual gear guides, no outdoor experience is worth undertaking unless you have the latest and greatest (read expensive) gear. A two-person tent's five-star rating by Backpacker magazine apparently means that every night spent in said tent during a howling blizzard will be as comfortable as a stay in a five-star resort. And woe be to anyone who even considers a snow cave as shelter.

Five for Cold Weather: Mountain bike riding through late fall, winter and early spring

Five off-season trail rides to keep in your mountain bike quiver.

It's the full-finger gloves, warm tights, warm inner layers, windbreaker jackets, beanies-under-the-helmet season. It's time for mountain bike riders who don't ski, or skiers simply looking for a change of recreation pace when the snow conditions aren't that good. And during most winters, there are always trails that will be snow free and worth riding. Here's a few of my favorite off-season rides:

Bend Brews: An exercise in shameless self-promotion of my new book

Bend Brews, a new book about Bend’s beer culture, tells the stories of our area breweries.

This past winter local photographer and passionate beer lover, Andre Bartels, approached me with the idea of collaborating on a book about craft beers and the craft-brewing business in Oregon.
I immediately envisioned myself swilling every possible ale, lager and stout in the state in a short but oh so sweet project.
