Description and trailer of the film, “The Voice of Hind Rajab”
WHAT
On March 13, Shararah Films, Jewish Voice for Peace with Central Oregon for a Free Palestine will host a screening of “The Voice of Hind Rajab,” Oscar nominated for The Best International Feature film.
January 29, 2024 Red Crescent volunteers receive an emergency call. A 5-year old girl is trapped in a car under Israeli military fire in Gaza, pleading for rescue. While trying to keep her on the line, they do everything they can to get an ambulance to her. Her name was Hind Rajab.
The duration of the events at the Red Crescent office in Ramallah was five hours. The first call came in at 2:35pm and Hind’s voice dropped at 7:30pm. During this time, the ambulance and the rescuers were an 8-minute drive away from Hind. Yet, for hours they could not reach her.
“The Voice of Hind Rajab” reconstructs the events on that day using the audio transcripts and recordings from the Palestinian Red Crescent office in Ramallah, where the call was taken. While the people on screen are actors, all the voices we hear offscreen – of Hind Rajab and her 14-year old cousin, Layan Hamada – are real recordings.
Kaouther Ben Hania, the film’s director and screenwriter, received permission from Hind Rajab’s mother, Wesam Hamada, to produce The Voice of Hind Rajab. Hind’s mother, in an introduction of the film, stated:
“My message is more than just words. It is the pain of a mother who lost her daughter, then found in the outpouring of love for her a message from God. I understood that my mission is to carry the voice of Gaza’s children to the world. The children who live in the heart of war, in the dark, in deprivation of their most basic rights, of their dreams that are torn before they bloom.”
The film will be followed by a livestream Q&A with Omar Alqam.
Omar A. Alqam is the Palestinian paramedic (PRCS) who was the first to receive the call from the 5 year old girl, Hind Rajab. He attempted to coordinate her rescue under life-threatening conditions. He is the main character of the movie, played by Palestinian actor, Motaz Malhees.
All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Palestinian Children’s Relief Fund.
WHY
Kaouther Ben Hania, the film’s director and screenwriter, captures various reasons why screening this film is important. As a story documenting the killing of a 5-year old child in Gaza, using the actual recording of her voice, this film is not meant to be passively watched. Emotional responses to this film are expected, and watching it with others helps to create a social setting for collective reflection, responsibility, and witnessing. Additionally, community screenings help the film reach audiences beyond traditional distribution channels.
