The Ghost Writer

“I should be scared,” she [Sarah] said. “I'm dead. I've never been dead before. And I'm not scared.”
Mary Sojourner's new novel, Going Through Ghosts, is a storytelling triumph. This should come as no surprise from this seasoned author, who is also a popular writing workshop facilitator and former commentator for NPR. Published by University of Nevada Press, Going Through Ghosts is a novel about transformation, both in a physical and a spiritual sense.
It's hard not to fall in love with such expertly fleshed-out characters like Maggie Foltz, a veteran cocktail waitress earning her unrewarding living in the Mojave Desert in Southern Nevada, her new friend Sarah, a Native American who works at the same casino and Jesse, a disturbed three-tour Vietnam vet.

One Man's Trash: Turning discarded materials into works of art

Customers stopping into Pakit Liquidators this past weekend, hoping to quietly pick up a replacement door handle or storm window, got a surprise.

Customers stopping into Pakit Liquidators this past weekend, hoping to quietly pick up a replacement door handle or storm window, got a surprise. Giant metal and, well, trash sculptures were displayed along Pakit's lawn and a purple hearse topped with a black ambulance siren welcomed customers and visitors. Inside Pakit, the near-eastside liquidator and all purpose secondhand/junk store, people of all ages and artistic abilities picked through piles of Pakit's inventory. But instead of a storm window, they were looking to find the perfect “finger” for a garbage gargoyle, or a wrench that best suggested a trumpet player's forearm.

High and High Minded: Doug Benson loves pot jokes, but he's also probably smarter than you

Doug Benson has made a career out of lampooning celebrities, talking about movies and making people laugh in the process. Oh, and he's also done just fine for himself by getting super-duper stoned, then telling jokes, or even making a movie about it.
But sometimes Benson isn't necessarily funny, like when he chats on the phone from his home in L.A. in the days before one of his many cross-continental weekend comedy tours. Rather, he's damn smart, pumping out one piece of cultural, political or social commentary after another. There are laughs during a 20-minute discussion with Benson, but these moments of hilarity are outweighed by the “holy-shit-he's-got-a-point” sort of instances the comic creates when he, for example, unleashes a deft critique of reality television in which he argues, quite convincingly, that American Idol is TV's most worthwhile reality program. And don't get him started on Celebrity Apprentice.

Our Picks for 4/7 – 4/15: Larry and His Flask, Tony Smiley, Floater, Doug Benson, Riders for the Cure and more

What to do in Central Oregon the week of April 7 – 15.

Larry and His Flask
thursday 8
It's been a few weeks since this hillbilly jamboree of a band set off across the country to accompany Dropkick Murphys on their St. Patrick Day's tour, but now LAHF is back for this sure-to-be-insane show. Hit the Sound section for a feature on the band and their recent tour. 8pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave. $5.
The RTL Project, Cloaked Characters, Mosley Wotta, DJ Hit N Runn
thursday 8
It might seem like an odd pairing: the often-poppy, sometimes-bluesy Reed Thomas Lawrence and a collection of Bend's finest hip-hop acts. But this will work, and you're going to be able to dance to whatever sounds you hear, that much is sure. $5. 8pm. The Summit Saloon & Stage, 125 NW Greenwood Ave.

Following the Beep: Why I have a metal detector and how it (hopefully) helps me find treasure

This late winter and early spring, I have become a slave to the beep. Beep, beep, beep – a quick metallic staccato as our metal detector, the Garrett Ace250, teases us with the possibility of unearthing a rare coin, a lost Rolex or an antique diamond ring. Armed with our “kit,” slang in the metal detecting culture for our detector, a pin-pointer, a shovel and an ice pick, my husband and I have scaled hill and dale in the hopes of finding that elusive buried treasure.
Metal detecting, like gambling, attracts the eternal optimist. Who else would spend a sunny Saturday afternoon waving a metal wand for hours over countless acres of park, forest and desert on the slim chance of striking it rich?
If you are a group-joining type, you can sit in on a meeting of the High Desert Treasure Club. They meet the second Wednesday of every month at the Bend VFW Hall at 7pm.

Laughing by the Seat of His Pants: Cash Levy decides Bend is the place for his improvisational humor

Cash Levy, Tower Theatre, Comedy Central, Showtime, Late Late show, craig ferguson,

One wouldn't think that mentioning the anatomy of an extinct animal could offend anyone, but comedian Cash Levy learned otherwise when he told a joke in one of his shows that included the phrase “pterodactyl scrotum.” A couple just couldn't handle the fact that he'd made such a comment and voiced their concern. Perhaps they were offended by the mere size of prehistoric junk, or maybe it's still too soon to poke fun at dinosaurs because, well, they've had a rough go over the past couple hundred million years.

Our Picks for 3/24 – 4/1: Portland Cello Project, Cool Nutz, Cash Levy, Portland Indie Infusion, Nershi-Law Duo and more

Portland Cello Project
wednesday 24
Yeah, OK, the notion of a bunch of cellos on one stage might not sound terribly cool, but trust us, it is quite cool. This crew of cellists from their namesake town is playing a free show in which they combine their string talents Captain Planet style to give us often-rocking arrangements. They can play classically, and that's cool, but they also roll out covers of contemporary favorites, and well, that's preeety cool. Free. All ages. 7pm. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.

wRite: When Nothing Works

Nun: Do you ever wake up scared in the early hours of the morning?
Me (the cop): Almost every night.
Nun: And does this fear originate somewhere in the area of the navel.
Me: Above the navel, somewhere between the navel and the solar plexus.
Nun: And what do you do about it?
Me: My mind finds specific things to worry about, and the fear gets absorbed.
Nun: These things you worry about, are they to do with recent acts, statements, events you have set in motion?
Me: Always.
Nun: Good. You're not going to understand immediately, but this vulnerable area around your navel is the only thing about you that is fully human.
– John Burdett
