A Duck Evolves: Bond Street Grill replaces Decoy

My first impression upon entering the Bond Street Grill, formerly known as Decoy Bar and Grill, was that of a warm and delicious-smelling haven from downtown bustle.
The wind was blowing and the chill was sharp. But the moment we stepped into the restaurant I was reminded of other cozy club-type restaurants I've enjoyed in my life, from the classic Bull and Finch Pub in Boston (the original Cheers) to dozens of other similar places in the Bay Area.
The restaurant was about half full. There were several large groups chatting, drinking and eating, and everyone seemed comfortable and happy. Although the patrons were primarily of the AOL users crowd, younger people were filing in, perhaps anticipating the live blues and jazz music that the restaurant has on Saturday nights. The music is a new addition since father-and-son team Fran and Chris Nardella purchased the restaurant last year. In December, they changed the name to Bond Street Grill. Fran was a physician in Phoenix and Chris had managed restaurants, but this is the first restaurant they have owned.

Gather Round the Table: Jen's Garden's community table offers wallet-friendly fine dining

Jen's Garden in Sisters doesn't do shtick. Dishes are served without flashy components, such as the now-ubiquitous vertically stacked plate presentation.

Jen's Garden in Sisters doesn't do shtick. Dishes are served without flashy components, such as the now-ubiquitous vertically stacked plate presentation. Instead, Jen's keeps the focus on quality ingredients and execution. Rather than opt for modern, sleek decorations, Jen's Garden channels a country-style living room. Still, despite the lack of flair, Jen's Garden has carved a name for itself as one of the best fine-dining restaurants in Central Oregon and its $26 entrees are worth every penny.
But recently, Jen's Garden began offering a less-expensive version of their prix-fixe menu Wednesday through Friday, at its ten-seat “Community Table.” Diners pay $19 for three courses, which change on a nightly basis.

Tea For Fun?

The schoolyard chant, “Beer before liquor, never sicker; liquor before beer, never fear” might be best left in the Kappa Kappa Delta house.

Those who have found themselves buying three “beef” chalupas after a rough night always have a theory as to how their liver deceived them.
The schoolyard chant, “Beer before liquor, never sicker; liquor before beer, never fear” might be best left in the Kappa Kappa Delta house. If you've been drinking vodka all night, is it suicidal to have a Scotch nightcap? Is your liver really so devious that it considers a Long Island iced tea a complete insult and as such will get you back the next day?

Well Good Morning, Valentine’s Day! Have a Cupcake

Happy Valentine’s Day, Bent Readers! Here, have a cupcake:

Probably one of the best Valentine’s presents I’ve received in a while was waking up this morning at my house on Hill Street and Delaware and realizing that I could, for the first time ever, walk across the street and buy a muffin and a cup of coffee instead of driving downtown or starving until lunch, because I’m too lazy and/or don’t have gas in my car. This is because Gotta B Gluten Free opened this morning. Happy Valentine’s Day, indeed!

Bend’s New Downtown Japanese Spot

Sushi lovers  have been eagerly anticipating the announcement that the new Japanese restaurant from Kanpai’s owner would be opening soon and they got their wish Friday when chef Michael Murphy and owner Justin Cook announced that Boken is taking reservations. The restaurant is located in the Breezeway adjacent to Mirror Pond Plaza in the former home of the Downtowner, and, more recently, Lola’s.

Di Lusso Bakery Cafe in Downtown Bend Closes

Di Lusso, the popular downtown bakery and coffee shop abruptly closes.

On my way downtown this afternoon (to pump some iron, of course) I noticed a printed sign on the door of Di Lusso Bakery Cafe explaining that yesterday was the popular coffee shop and bakery’s last day in operation.
The sign cites “unforeseen circumstances” as the reason for the abrupt closure and offers some heartfelt thanks for the years of patronage their customers had provided them.

Where to Eat on Valentine’s Day

There are a couple options for what to give the object of your affection on Valentine’s Day.
There’s always the heart-shaped box of chocolates or chalky candy hearts from a drug store, and the ubiquitous cliche cards that say something like “I choo-choo-choose you!” above a picture of a train. Of course, you could splurge on jewelry, maybe one of those “open heart” necklaces that actually looks like a snake made by Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman at Kay Jewelers.
But no matter what you decide, you’ll probably have to eat. And luckily, many restaurants serve special Valentine’s Day menus that go above and beyond their everyday offerings. Below are a few options. Because while celebrity designed jewelry is nice, you can’t eat cubic zirconia.

For Good Luck and Prosperity: Five Fusion's Chinese New Year ushers in goodwill with an eight-course feast

In Central Oregon, the Chinese New Year was a bit quieter than the massive fetes found in cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles. But at Five Fusion and Sushi Bar, owned by Chinese-American Lilian Chu, the holiday was in full force.

For anyone who's been to any city with a sizable Chinese population on the Chinese New Year, you know the holiday as an explosion of good luck charms, music, firecrackers, people in dragon costumes crawling through the streets and an abundance of all things red.
It's a celebration of the year to come, calling for prosperity, luck and happiness. Each year is marked by one of twelve animals, each carrying its own set of attributes – 2011 is the year of the rabbit, and those born this year are said to be ambitious, virtuous and financially lucky. Tradition dictates that one sweep his or her house the night before the New Year, but not the day after – the good luck will be swept out. The food is, of course, important as well, involving a lengthy feast, often with eight courses – a lucky number – marking the evening portion of the holiday.
