Flaming Frat Pranks, Seegers vs. the Reagan fan club, gun play and more

If youโ€™re in a college fraternity, there are a few activities in which you will almost certainly find yourself involved. You will consume beer by placing the keg tap directly in your mouth as your โ€œbrosโ€ hold your feet up in the air.

Jeez, Sorry for Partying
If you're in a college fraternity, there are a few activities in which you will almost certainly find yourself involved. You will consume beer by placing the keg tap directly in your mouth as your “bros” hold your feet up in the air. You will clothe yourself exclusively in T-shirts celebrating parties you and your “bros” have previously facilitated. And, if you're really, really lucky, you and/or your “bros” will douse a couch in lighter fluid and light it aflame as you stand awestruck in its glow with a smile on your face and a Busch Light in your hand.

Vote Yes on Measure 76: Rivers and parks deserve our support

What have you done for your local parks, rivers and wildlife recently? Not much opportunity to help? Here's a perfect chance for you to do something truly meaningful for these things we all cherish. In November, you can vote “yes” on Measure 76.

Texas Crack Was Ignorant

As a New Yorker, who has lived in Texas for many years and then moved to Bend two years ago…I found Jim Andersonโ€™s little comment (The Natural World, 9-29) about Texas offensive. It certainly had nothing to do with your subject matter.

It certainly had nothing to do with your subject matter. Texas, nor Texans may not be your cup of tea (java) but it is just this type of Texas bashing that infuriates me because it is usually done out of little/no knowledge regarding the state or its people. It comes from a place of insecurity or ignorance of the people or the state. I love living in Bend….it was chosen….but some of the thinking is backward and uneducated when it comes to the rest of the world.

Give Drag A Chance

I have read the lengthy letter of concern from Lisa Deanne Carlson, and I'm sorry, but as an entertainer and self-titled DRAG QUEEN, I don't see how my lifestyle and struggles, obstacles and challenges adversely affect hers, and I surely would never ask her or the Trans Community to cease doing what they do because it affected me or my journey, which it does not.

Spill The Wine For Bend Galleries

For the past eleven years, since my wife and I became full time residents of Bend, we have enjoyed freeloading at the monthly art walks. Have we ever bought art on these occasions?Maybe ten small Christmas gifts and one ceramic piece that I accidentally broke. All of which were probably of far less value than all the wine and snacks we’ve consumed.

Drag Show Is Not Discriminatory

Iโ€™ve been working with the Human Dignity Coalition since 2002 and one of the things I am most proud of is the feedback we get that our events feel safe for our whole community.

I've been working with the Human Dignity Coalition since 2002 and one of the things I am most proud of is the feedback we get that our events feel safe for our whole community. Whether it is Bend Pride or our drop-in nights for young people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trangender, queer or questioning (LGBTQ), we want all people to feel welcome and accepted. In small town Bend, there are no gay bars or youth centers that serve people who are LGBTQ. HDC strives to bridge this gap, providing social opportunities as well as services for our community.

GOP and Tea Party Have Been Bought and Sold

The good old U.S. of A. is slipping away from being a democracy and is becoming a plutocracy.

The good old U.S. of A. is slipping away from being a democracy and is becoming a plutocracy. Thanks to the Supreme Court that decided a corporation is the same as an individual person, and also some of the multi-billionaires in our midst who want to do away with all government control. The Koch brothers, David and Charles, for instance have a fortune of over thirty-five billion dollars. That's a hunk of money that can buy anything and influence the government.
A plutocracy is a government operated by the very rich for their own benefit, where the common folks, you and I, are disposable.

Pledge, DISCLOSE and Assassinate!

The author is reporting from a city infested by mutant monsters. Not another lame zombie or vampire flick, but New York City under siege by bedbugs.
Remember 1994? A half-million slaughtered in Rwanda, Nancy Kerrigan's knee clubbed to help Tonya Harding, O.J. “maybe” killing his wife and lover, Richard Nixon mercifully dying, and a guy who left his wife on her deathbed for a better offer named Newt Gingrich announcing something called “Contract With America.” That contract had eight key policy points, and helped Republicans win the midterm elections.

Rondo Boozell, the Rambo Candidate

If we endorsed candidates on the basis of colorfulness, Bend City Council hopeful Ronald “Rondo” Boozell would be a shoo-in.

If we endorsed candidates on the basis of colorfulness, Bend City Council hopeful Ronald “Rondo” Boozell would be a shoo-in.
It's not Boozell's positions that make him colorful, although he does have some interesting ones. A self-described libertarian, he says he's “setting out to do nothing less than change our culture” and “dreaming of a sustainable lifestyle.” He wants to encourage Bend residents to buy locally, and thinks government should “get out of the way … and let businesses prosper.”

Who Let The Hot Out? Lopez on marriage, Obama hates kids and more

The Heat of Autumn
It's officially fall, as of last week. It's the time of year when the leaves change color, the days get cooler and football dominates most casual conversation. Well, except for this year, that is. Well, people are still talking about football, but the weather on the West Coast has been anything like fall like. Temperatures have been weirdly warm here in Central Oregon, staying in the low 80s all week, but down in Los Angeles it got straight up scary hot… as in the hottest day ever.
