City Club to Take on East-West Divide

It doesn’t take long for new arrivals to figure out that Bend is divided into two towns. It’s a story of have and have-nots, but also one of values— cross and road bikes versus motorcross bikes, if you will.

The Love Issue

For the second year, we hit the streets (well, actually posted an online ballot) to find out who our readers thought were the hottest people in Central Oregon. Some folks might be fence sitters when it comes to politics, but given the number of votes we saw, it appears that most of us have anโ€ฆ

The Agent of Change: Josh Cook

In many ways Josh Cook is an unlikely candidate to transform America's moribund health care system An emergency room physician, Cook set out to be a teacher only to find himself practicing medicine despite the fact that he never completed his undergraduate degree – it wasn't required for him to be accepted into medical school.โ€ฆ

In case there was any doubt, officials released an economic forecast today predicting more storms on the horizon. Even as economic indicators show Oregon’s economy is slowly growing, the state said today that job creation still remains “glacial,” according to the forecast from the state’s Office of Economic Analysis.

Losing Our Religion

The fact is: this nation was never a Christian nation to begin with (thankfully). Our Constitution and our Declaration are godless documents that protect us from religion, but also give people the freedom to worship as they choose. However, that doesn't give people the freedom to push it in our schools, our politics, or forceโ€ฆ

Wyden Grounds the Choppers

Helicopters have their place, but the sky over Crater Lake isn't one of them. Thanks to Ron Wyden, their racket won't be disturbing the serenity of Oregon's only national park – at least not for a while. Back in 2009, a Bend-based company called Leading Edge Aviation proposed to run as many as 300 helicopterโ€ฆ

National Geographic (Adventure version!), a publication which has a pretty good handle on these things, recently named Bend as one of the “World’s 25 Best Ski Towns.” Yep, right up there with Chamonix, France and Zermatt, Switzerland.

Move Over Chamonix, Here Comes Bend!

Not sure when National Geographic got into the overplayed town rankings business that seems to constitute Outside Magazine’s business model, but they apparently have and “surprise” Bend is on the mag’s list of top 25 ski towns—in the world… Yes, according to National Geographic we’re right up there with Banff, Aspen, Telluride, Crested Butte notโ€ฆ
