Mini TED conference coming to Bend
The first time I saw a TED talk I was blown away. The clarity of the ideas! The passion of the speaker! The succinct delivery! I never saw newspaper design the same way again.
City Club to Take on East-West Divide
It doesn’t take long for new arrivals to figure out that Bend is divided into two towns. It’s a story of have and have-nots, but also one of values— cross and road bikes versus motorcross bikes, if you will.
Pronghorn Sold To Hawaiian Group
Pronghorn, the Jack Nicklaus and Tom Fazio anchored golf and housing development that kickstarted the destination resort boom in Central Oregon, announced that it has been sold to a Hawaii-based resort development and management company. The Love Issue
For the second year, we hit the streets (well, actually posted an online ballot) to find out who our readers thought were the hottest people in Central Oregon. Some folks might be fence sitters when it comes to politics, but given the number of votes we saw, it appears that most of us have anโฆ

Inside youโll learn about our Local Heroes, most of whom were nominated by our readers, and how they contribute to ourโฆ
Child Evangelism Fellowship: Teaching students the “good word” during the lunch hour
I just got back from sitting in on a bible study group (20 rosy-cheeked youngsters), conducted during school hours in a trailer just a couple hundred short yards from the front door of Tumalo Community School (a Redmond public school, K-8). The Good News Club, which hosts the bible studies, is an “outreach ministry” forโฆ

The Agent of Change: Josh Cook
In many ways Josh Cook is an unlikely candidate to transform America's moribund health care system An emergency room physician, Cook set out to be a teacher only to find himself practicing medicine despite the fact that he never completed his undergraduate degree – it wasn't required for him to be accepted into medical school.โฆ

There When You Need Them: Commitment binds local search and rescue volunteers
Last November, a climber attempting The Wambat Route in Smith Rock State Park lost his hold and fell hard to a ledge below. Luckily for the climber, the Deschutes County Search and Rescue Mountain Rescue Unit was training at Smith Rock that day. They moved into action and immediately initiated the rescue. “He fell ontoโฆ
Friends In Foreign Lands: Local nurses travel abroad to volunteer time and energy for those with little resources
Once or twice a year Julie Bostrom, a busy mother of two, leaves behind her children and husband, co-owner of Timberline Mountain Guides, to follow her passion. The St. Charles Hospital emergency room nurse books unlikely destinations for her vacations. Rather than kicking it on a beach, Bostrom prefers to use her time to helpโฆ
Silver Moon Brewmaster Headed to Eugene
It seems as though Bend’s rapidly expanding craft beer industry has done nothing but import brewers over the last few years. So it was probably time that we started exporting again.
Storms still on economic horizon
In case there was any doubt, officials released an economic forecast today predicting more storms on the horizon. Even as economic indicators show Oregon’s economy is slowly growing, the state said today that job creation still remains “glacial,” according to the forecast from the state’s Office of Economic Analysis.
Losing Our Religion
The fact is: this nation was never a Christian nation to begin with (thankfully). Our Constitution and our Declaration are godless documents that protect us from religion, but also give people the freedom to worship as they choose. However, that doesn't give people the freedom to push it in our schools, our politics, or forceโฆ
345
That's how many meals that the local nonprofit Family Kitchen provided last Friday, a record for the local charity meal provider. Read about how the organization has stepped to meet the community's growing demand for its service in this week's news feature, “A Singular Purpose” Pg.
Wyden Grounds the Choppers
Helicopters have their place, but the sky over Crater Lake isn't one of them. Thanks to Ron Wyden, their racket won't be disturbing the serenity of Oregon's only national park – at least not for a while. Back in 2009, a Bend-based company called Leading Edge Aviation proposed to run as many as 300 helicopterโฆ
A Singular Purpose: Bend's charity meal provider has quietly met the demands of a growing population
At 56, John Regan is starting over – again. Next week he'll begin another job as a truck driver for a commercial outfit in Bend. For now he's living in the back of his van. An electrician by trade, Regan hasn't done any electrical work since the housing market flamed out four years ago. Likeโฆ
PCP Returns to Bend: Get high with the Portland Cello Project, not the recreational dissociative drug
If you plan on showing up at Summit High School with your mother, you might warn her that Portland Cello Project is better known for its tour with Buckethead than its arrangements of Beethoven. The Bistro Evolves: Tart twists traditional French cuisine into new shapes
Until recently, 920 Bond Street was better known for changing hands than for menus. Barcelona and 28 opened and closed, but it seems that Tart Bistro may be in for the long run. Awakenings: Actor Derek Sitter draws on his own struggles for new film project
Panic attacks, psych wards, medications and mental illness are usually the stuff of deep, dark family secrets. But in his film-writing debut, Bend local, Derek Sitter, shines a light on these themes as he tells the story of a man's struggle with bipolar disorder and the would-be cures offered by the pharmaceutical industry. Sitter, whoseโฆ
Bang the Drum Slowly: Woman in Black is straightforward with old school scares
The previews for Woman in Black are of the green-tinted night camera variety, showing “candid” audiences' reactions of fright. This is the same technique employed by the Paranormal Activity franchise to sell tickets. To me it's the film equivalent of restaurants showing faded pictures of their food in the window – never a good sign.โฆ
Into the Donkey Abyss
Look. You have your opinions? And I have mine. HOWEVER! It must be stated – and you're probably already well aware of the fact – that my opinion carries a weeeeeee bit more weight than yours. DON'T GET MAD! It's not your fault that your views of the world are somewhat less important than theโฆ
