Down Beat: Jazz is alive and well in Bend

It’s Thursday night and Joe Rohrbacher of Just Joe’s Music  on south Highway 97 has turned his store into a makeshift nightclub. A club that will feature local jazz musicians Dillon Schneider (guitar), John Allen (bass) and and Stephen Tate (drums) backing Portland tenor sax player David Evans that evening in concert.

Bend Over, Bend – Here It Comes Again

Bend racked up another dubious distinction this week: As reported in The Bulletin on Wednesday, we led the nation in declining home prices between the first quarter of 2009 and the first quarter of this year. Over that one-year period, home prices in the Bend Metropolitan Statistical Area fell by almost a quarter (23.

Source staff gets a nod from the Society of Professional Journos

We’re a pretty humble bunch around here, but we just had to let ya’ll know that your hometown alt weekly nabbed a couple of nods this past week from the Society of Professional Journalists for our writing and reporting in 2009. Voiceover: Sunday,Sunday, Sunday

Back in my pre-Bend days, I thought I could make it as an  television commercial actor and movie extra. Being on camera would be cool but it would simply be a way to get to what I really wanted to do- voiceover work.

What Doesn't Kill You

Ever heard that phrase, “What doesn't kill me, makes me stronger?” That's exactly why I eat Popeyes fried chicken every morning for breakfast, four Reese's peanut butter cups for lunch (washed down with a tumbler of Jack), followed by a sensible dinner. Doctors say this diet will surely kill me – while my Aunt Wandaโ€ฆ

When living in London, I entered restaurants on the famed Indian cuisine mecca, Brick Lane, with the general expectation of leaving uncomfortably full. Between the creamy dishes and the various accompaniments, this was almost a guarantee. The Spice Box, a new “home-style Indian cooking” restaurant in Bend, defies this expectation. Lighter, modern takes of classicโ€ฆ

Band of Horses: Infinite Arms

I first heard Band of Horses playing at the Les Schwab Amphitheater four years ago playing over the PA between sets of a Flaming Lips show. I ended up spending the summer of 2006 listening to their debut, Everything All The Time, and almost nothing else.About a year later, Band of Horses released the highlyโ€ฆ

Dudley Takes the Lead! (Yawn.)

There’s a new poll out this week that contains good news and bad news for Oregon Republicans. The good news: The poll shows their candidate, Chris Dudley, leading Democrat John Kitzhaber by a one-point margin.

The Army's “Second-Class Soldier” Treatment

The U.S. Army's proud boast is that it never leaves an injured comrade behind on the field. But it looks as if it's been leaving many of its comrades in the Oregon National Guard behind when they need medical care. Members of the Oregon Guard's 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team have complained to Oregon's congressionalโ€ฆ
