Floater Returns to Bend for Two Shows

Floater, the beloved Oregon eclectic rock band with one of the most die-hard followings in the Northwest, is coming back — once again — to Bend. The shows, produced by Random Presents, are slated for November 12 and 13 (Friday and Saturday) at the Domino Room with an electric show the first night and anโ€ฆ

Boneyard Beer Dinner at Common Table

Boneyard Beer, one of our new favorite breweries in town, is hosting a dinner at Common Table tomorrow. We mentioned the dinner in our previous blog, but just got some more information that makes it sound like a must-go.

We're Number One

There is rejoicing today all over Duckdom: The University of Oregon football team is ranked Number 1 in the nation for the first time in history, and stands at Number 2 (behind Oklahoma) in the season’s first BCS standings. Following last week’s upset of Ohio State by Wisconsin, the undefeated Ducks edged Ohio State outโ€ฆ

Bend the Next Palo Alto? No Thanks.

Jonathan Heiliger, Facebook’s vice president for technical operations, was in town yesterday, and he said an astonishing thing. “I think Bend has the potential to be as good as Palo Alto – if not better,” Heiliger told the crowd at the Bend Venture Conference.

Bend’s 92/9 FM Now Streaming Online

They’d been talking about it for some time now, but Bend’s 92/9 FM is now officially streaming their broadcast online as of Friday afternoon. For those who may not be able to tune in at work because the office radio has been hijacked by smooth jazz fans, this is a big coup.

Eating Animals: Taylor's Sausage makes a good case for carnivores

I have recently been contemplating cutting meat out of my diet. It seems, however that the restaurants that have opened as of late in Bend are meat-centric, and truthfully, I'm elated. Because that's the only excuse I can muster for why I ate three of the largest ribs I've ever seen on top of wolfingโ€ฆ

Bend Brews: An exercise in shameless self-promotion of my new book

This past winter local photographer and passionate beer lover, Andre Bartels, approached me with the idea of collaborating on a book about craft beers and the craft-brewing business in Oregon. I immediately envisioned myself swilling every possible ale, lager and stout in the state in a short but oh so sweet project.

Central Oregon’s Last Comic Standing Begins Tonight

There are funny people among us here on the High Desert and some of those folks will test their hilarity tonight at the opening round of Central Oregon’s Last Comic Standing. They’ll tell jokes and do impressions and make fart sounds and all the other sort of good stuff that makes you explode in laughter.

Oregon Scores High; Republicans Grumble

Democrats are crowing and Republicans are harrumphing over the new Forbes magazine list  of the best states for business, which ranks Oregon at Number 6. An even nastier pill for Republicans and others who predicted grass would grow in the streets after passage of Measures 66 and 67 was that Oregon actually jumped four spotsโ€ฆ

Erin Cole-Baker Music Video “World Sweet World”

Late last year, local songwriter Erin Cole-Baker debuted her full-length record, Talon and Spur, which included the excellently quaint number, “World Sweet World.” Then — just last night — local photographer and filmmaker Josh Cordell shot this video for that track with the help of his crew, Paula Watts and Zack Nutter.

Rocky Horror Returns to The Tower October 30

The Tower is keeping with a recent tradition by hosting another Halloween weekend screening of Rocky Horror Picture Show during which enthusiastically costumed patrons throw things at the screen and sing and dance along to the 1975 cult classic. The show is slated for Saturday, October 30.

For Deschutes County Commissioner: Dallas Brown

In the Deschutes County Commissioner race, looks can be deceiving. This office is one of those positions that, against all reason, is partisan. County Commissioners work on land use, public safety, or locking horns with constituents over waste mitigation… not exactly the kind of platform issues that define a (D) or an (R).

Common Table Opens its Doors

Common Table, the non-profit restaurant concept we wrote about last month (see the story here) has finally opened its doors! Common Table opened on September 24 and has seen a steady stream of guests coming in to check out the unique concept. Common Table, which acts as part restaurant, part soup kitchen and part conversationโ€ฆ

Turn it On: October means more water in local rivers

October is here and that means the river will rise! Canals that flow out of the Deschutes to irrigate agriculture in the surrounding areas will be shut off, and flows will increase substantially, making it possible to kayak down sections of the river that are too boney and shallow for a kayak during the warmerโ€ฆ

Mad Men Yourself

Guys! Clear your schedule for Sunday, October 17, at 10:00 p.m.! (No, that's not when I'm going to murder your spouse for $25,000! GEEZ! I already told you I wasn't going to do it! Stop with the nagging!) Why? Because you're going to drop whatever or whomever it is you're doing to watch the Madโ€ฆ

Give it the Finger: Wasilla native Matt Hopper on his solid new album

Matt Hopper is from Wasilla, Alaska, but don't expect the rock and roll singer-songwriter to spend much time talking about that – or, for that matter, say anything about that city's most famous resident. “To me, you either make good music or you don’t, it doesn’t have anything to do with where you’re from exceptโ€ฆ

Bend's Maralyn Thoma reflects on a career in daytime soaps

For at least two decades, the cabinet underneath my grandparent's television was packed full of video cassettes and as I dug in search of Star Wars, I had to pass through stacks of tapes labeled “All My Children” or “General Hospital.” My grandmother, like so many other women of her generation and the two orโ€ฆ

“Toxic Election-Year Sludge”

The author is wondering why FoxNews.com reads like TheOnion.com. Hilarious headlines abound! Things not to do if considering running for elected office: Confess on camera to being a witch and giving SNL a reason to stay on the air; pose in photographs dressed as a Nazi; question capitalism or electioneering; write a political column thatโ€ฆ

Don’t Stop Believing…Says the Sign Outside Our Office

Say what you want about Journey, or the act of defacing public property, but when coming to a stop at this sign outside the Source Weekly offices, it’s damn near impossible not to have yourself a chuckle. Who knew that a public street sign could become a promotion for one of the most beloved hair-bandโ€ฆ

For U.S. House of Representatives Seat 2: Joyce Segers

Joyce Segers isn't gong to be elected to Congress this year, or ever. And that's a good thing, because she may be one of the least prepared candidates we've ever seen for a seat as important as that of a United States congresswoman. But that's not going to stop us from endorsing her for theโ€ฆ

For U.S. Senate: Ron Wyden

The decision in the U.S. Senate race in Oregon is as close to a no-brainer as it can get. Ron Wyden has given us 14 years of distinguished service in the Senate, and his opponent, Jim Huffman, has given us no reason that he should replace him.

For Deschutes County Clerk: Nancy Blankenship

The Deschutes County Clerk remains, thankfully, a non-partisan position in Deschutes County. That's as it should be, given the clerk's role in overseeing all local elections. While the local Republican Party has worked to push the candidate whose personal politics reflect its own, we're not going down that road. While we like Geri Hauser andโ€ฆ

ODOT's Parkway Deathtrap

It seemed like a good idea at the time. That appears to be the Oregon Department of Transportation's best excuse for why it decided to put an unsignalized pedestrian crosswalk in the middle of the Bend Parkway. Bob Hunt, 55, and his 14-year-old daughter, Chelsea, were crossing the parkway with their bikes in the crosswalkโ€ฆ

Wolf Poachers, Truth in Advertising, Free Beer and Trump

Wolves and The Wild, Wild East Well it was only a matter of time. Like a right-wing nut job who actually believes all vitriol that is dished up on a.m. radio and decides to do something about it with a gun in hand or a bomb in the trunk, some coward slunk into the woodsโ€ฆ

Dallas Is the Man for Deschutes

I write in support of an energetic, intelligent and knowledgeable candidate for Deschutes County Commissioner – Dallas Brown. Dallas has a deep understanding of the government, having worked with officials at local, state and federal agencies. He knows that the role of government is to serve all the people equally and justly, not to caterโ€ฆ

Ready To Polish His Brass Balls

Regarding the Boot, (9-29), I want to thank the Source for this dubious honor. And in the spirit in which it has been offered, I accept this award. It was described in some detail as “two large, highly polished brass spheres mounted on a walnut base,” but alas, as it “isn't finished yet,” I lookโ€ฆ

DMV: Consensus is NO!
