Our Picks For 10/31-11/08

Events happening in the area that we are sure you will enjoy.

Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band with Harley Bourbon and Boxcar

String Band

wednesday 31

Everything about Rev. Peyton’s band is big. The reverend is big, as is his beard. His players are big. His sound is big. And the soulfulness of his hillbilly Americana and blues music is big. Damn big. The Big Damn Band, with their slide guitar, upright bass and washboard, are rolling in from the back roads of southern Indiana, but don’t let their size or the Reverend’s growling voice scare you—they often have big damn smiles plastered across their faces. Local rockabilly ass-kickers, Harley Bourbon and Boxcar String Band, open the show. All Ages. $10 at Bendticket.com. 10 p.m. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

First Friday Art Walk

friday 2

Bundle up and cruise the streets of downtown for the November art walk. Shops stay open late to host new art exhibits from local and national artists AND offer ever-popular food and wine tasting. We suggest checking out the live body painting at Astro Lounge and the Tin Pan Theater’s Dia de Los Muertos alter with live Flamenco guitar. 5 p.m. Downtown Bend.

The Enlightenment Trio with Isabelle Senger

friday 2

If a night of complex, yet accessible chamber music sounds like a relaxing time—and it does—maybe you should go check out The Enlightenment Trio. The threesome hails from Pasadena, Calif., which is where they play with some of the finest musicians in SoCal. They’ll be joined by accomplished violinist Isabelle Senger, who will perform the melodic “La Folia.” All ages. $35/$10 students. 7:30 p.m. The Oxford Hotel, 10 NW Minnesota Ave.

Dia de Los Muertos

friday 2

Why don’t we have more cool celebrations like Day of the Dead? The concept is cool, the art is cool, and, in this case, the cause is cool. The event supports Rise Up and Recursos para Derechos Humanos, a local Latino nonprofit whose mission is to educate Central Oregon about the challenges facing our Latino community. You should go, because there will be live music from MOsley WOtta and Lamp as well as Latino sets by Portland’s DJ Dani. Viva la ancestors! Viva Oregon’s Immigrant Rights Organization (causaoregon.blogspot.com)! 2 p.m., The Old Stone Church, 57 NW Franklin Ave.

Happy Dirty Girls Half Marathon and 5K

saturday 3

Gather your girls and go for a run this weekend! If you haven’t registered yet, don’t sweat it. You can still register for the 5K run at Fleet Feet on Thursday or at Five Pine Lodge, in Sisters, on Friday (the half marathon is full). After Friday’s expo at the Five Pine Spa grab your girlfriends and head out on the town for a wine walk—a great way to relax before racing. Celebrate afterwards with beers and treats at Three Creeks Brewing. Check the website happydirtygirl.com for a complete schedule of events. No day-of registration. Race starts at 9 a.m. Five Pines Lodge, 1021 Desperado Trail.

Lord’s Acre Day with 10K and 5K runs

saturday 3

This year is the 66th annual Lord’s Acre day, one of Central Oregon’s oldest and most down-home events. This year includes a 10K run and a 5K run. Go fast to work up an appetite for the pit barbeque dinner (they actually bury a pig!), which starts at 11:45 a.m. Aside from the race, you’ll also find coffees, pies, crafts and other home-spun novelties for sale. And did we mention the barbeque? You can register for the race the day of the event as well as at a number of other locations around town, like Foot Zone and Fleet Feet Sports. See powellbuttechurch.com for more info. 9 a.m. Powell Butte Christian Church, 13720 S.W. State Highway 126.

Human Dignity Coalition's 20th Anniversary Party Barn Dance

saturday 3

It’s been 20 years since a bunch of people got together and said, “Seems like we ought to do something about the jerks around here harassing the gays,” and bravely started a group to deal with homophobia in Central Oregon. Go celebrate the good work they’ve been doing ever since at the Human Dignity Coalition’s anniversary party. Best part will likely be the costumes. It’s Western attire. Folks, please make sure you wear pants under those chaps. There’ll also be a BBQ dinner, music from Moon Mountain Ramblers, an auction and booze. All ages. $10 in advance. $15 at the door. Tickets at 541-385-3320. 6 p.m. Sons of Norway Hall, 549 NW Harmon Blvd.

Volcanic Funk Party #1

saturday 3

The Polyrhythmics and Eleven Eyes bring you the biggest, fattest, funkiest jam of the season. If the Polyrhythmics sound familiar, it’s probably because they play here regularly, their Bend shows are always a sweaty, world-beat dance party. These fusion funksters are an eight-piece crew that, without fail, create infectious and complex grooves. Eleven Eyes join the party, contributing some psychedelic jam jazz with a horn section and a turntable. These musicians are at the top of their game getting wild on lengthy danceable improvisations. All Ages. $8 at Bendticket.com. 8:30 p.m. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

The Nature of Words 2012 Literary Festival

wednesday 7- sunday 11

Five days of author readings, book signings, workshops, lectures and presentations all across town! Flip to our Culture section for our staff picks on how to tackle this celebration of the written word. The event kicks-off at 7 p.m. Thursday with the Rising Star Creative Writing Awards Ceremony at the COCC library, 2600 NW College Way. See full schedule and event details in The Nature of Words guide in this issue.

The Horde and the Harem

thursday 8

Bring your hordes and harems to The Hand for some Pacific NW indie rock. Check out the Sound section for more on this Seattle band. 21+. 8 p.m. The Horned Hand, 507 NW Colorado Ave.

The Infamous Stringdusters with Polecat

friday 2

The Infamous Stringdusters are to the Appalachian hills what The String Cheese Incident is to the Rocky Mountains. Both bluegrass bands are ambassadors of high country hoedown music, with one foot on the porch of Bill Monroe while the other rests somewhere in the jamgrass future. Polecat is joining the Charlottesville, Virginia-based band for a night of hootin’ and hollerin.’ Pack a flask. $15 at Bendticket.com. 8 p.m. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.
