Our Pick for 8/18/8/25

An Evening with

Chris Horner

thursday 18

One of Bend's most famous residents, pro cyclist Chris Horner, is giving his hometown residents a look into his life as part of Team RadioShack and what it's like to race in the Tour de France. Horner, as many know, suffered injuries in a serious crash during the race and had to withdraw. He's since come back to Bend to recover and is thankfully giving this talk (which includes a Q&A) session at the Tower. $20/Adults, $5/Kids 18 and under. 7pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.

Bend Brewfest

thursday-saturday 18-20

We're nice people over here at the Source, which is why we went out and tasted almost every beer that's arriving here for the Bend Brewfest this weekend at the Les Schwab Amphitheater. Take a look at what we thought about these brews before you head down there.

Jay Tablet
Birthday Bash

saturday 20

Rapper/producer Jay Tablet is celebrating his birthday this weekend and wants you to come party with him. Joining the electro-hip-hop whiz are plenty of notable and regional performers, including plenty of familiar names, like Rory Oneders, Amsterdam, Caitlin Cardier, DJ Harlo, Card 1 and more. 9pm. Madhappy Lounge, 850 NW Brooks St.

Larry and His Flask

saturday 20

After spending most of their summer skipping from town to town on the Van's Warped Tour, and gaining plenty of fans along the way. Thankfully, though, they're coming back home for this Saturday night show in the Parrilla parking lot and we're going to go ahead and say this is going to be a hell of a party. Check out the review of their new album in the Sound section and then ride your bike or walk to this Show Us Your Spokes show, benefitting Commute Options. 7pm. Parrilla Grill, 635 NW 14th St.

Chuckers for Charity:
USPA Player's Cup

sunday 21

A few weeks ago, we profiled this local group that plays polo - the kind on horses. This installment of the Chuckers for Charity series features some excellent players (and their horses) from around the region to raise money for an array of nonprofit organizations, including the Deschutes Basin Land Trust, the Redmond Humane Society, Equine Outreach, Sparrow Clubs USA. And there's a best-hat contest, too! $10/person, kids 12 and under free, $20 field-side tailgate parking. 12pm, Camp Fraley Ranch, 60580 Gosney Road.

Kottonmouth Kings

monday 22

The heroes of stony, psychedelic hip-hop return to Bend with local boy The Dirtball now part of the lineup. Check out the Sound section to read about how much The Dirtball still loves his hometown. $16, $19 at the door. All ages. 8pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

A Prairie Home Companion, Summer Love Tour 2011

thursday 25

There have been plenty of rock and country shows at the Les Schwab Amphitheater over the years, but this performance will be one of the most unique the venue has ever seen. Garrison Keillor is bringing his legendary public radio, A Prairie Home Companion, show to the LSA as part of the Summer of Love Tour. If you don't know, Prairie Home is one of the finest samplings of Americana you'll hear on the radio and a throwback to simpler, smarter times. Featured at this show in Bend will be some jazz, the All Star Shoe Band, plenty of other performers and guests, and you should be able to count on some news from Lake Wobegon, too. $40. All ages. 7pm. Les Schwab Amphitheater, 344 SW Shevlin
Hixon Dr.

The Preservation

thursday 25

This show came in a little bit under the radar, but it's worth noting the excellent vocals and indie-folk stylings of this poppy Austin-based act that's led by Mario Matteoli, a former member of the Weary Boys. Also on the bill are local up-and-comers the Rural Demons. Free. 8pm. The Horned Hand, 507 NW Colorado Ave.
