Picks for 1/12-1/19

A gathering of happenings for the upcoming week.

Pickwick

thursday 12

This show, like many this month, seemed to come in a bit under the radar, but when we cranked this Seattle band's "Hacienda Motel" in our offices, we became quick converts to the soulful quirkiness these dudes lay down. The sound is not at all what you'd expect from six Northwest white kids who were raised on indie rock. There's a definitively Motown feel to these guys at times, but at the core of their genre-crushing catalog is some excellent songwriting. Does this description sound a little weird to you? Absolutely. But it's a free show and we'd suggest you get yourself there. 7pm. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.

Polyrhythmics

thursday 12

Want some more Seattle music on Thursday night? Head over to the Silver Moon after the Pickwick show and you can see this massive Afrofunk band that takes world music and spins it on its freaking head... and speaking of spinning on one's head, you might want to do that once this horn-laden act gets rolling. $7 at bendticket.com, $10 door. 9pm. Silver Moon Brewing Co., 24 NW Greenwood Ave.

The Who's Tommy

opens friday 13

The 2nd Street Theater is looking to rock your pants off with a performance of the Who's classic rock opera. Check out this week's Culture page and learn all about this rock and roll opus. Performances run from January 13-28. $20 at 2ndstreettheater.com, $22 at door. Sunday shows at 3pm, all others at 7:30pm. See 2ndstreettheater.com for complete list of showtimes. 7:30pm. 2nd Street Theater, 220 NE Lafeyette Ave.

Mel Brown

friday-saturday 13-14

The Jazz at the Oxford series continues this week with another appearance in Bend by Portland jazz drumming wizard and exceptionally nice man, Mel Brown, who will be laying down beats for his Hammond B-3 organ player, Louis Pain, saxophonist Renato Caranto and guitarist Dan Balmer. There are two shows over the course of the weekend, so jazz enthusiasts, you've got ample chances to say hello to Mr. Brown. $30 at bendticket.com. 8pm. The Oxford Hotel Ballroom, 10 Minnesota Ave.

Oregon Wrestling Classic

friday-sunday 13-15

Please note: There will be exactly zero wrestlers at this event wearing jean shorts, face paint and/or tassles. This is real, actual wrestling, a sport that has long been one of Oregon's favorite pastimes. This massive event up at the fairgrounds features not just 80 high-school teams, but also matches featuring kids, amateurs and even a women's division. For more info, visit oregonwrestle.com. Begins 8:45am on Friday, 8:30am Saturday, 9am Sunday. Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center, 3800 SW Airport Way.

This is Spinal Tap

saturday 14

There are old movies you remember loving and then there are classics like This is Spinal Tap that live forever in your consciousness, allowing you to bring forward quotes like, "This one goes to 11" whenever you damn well please. The classic story of a British rock band's fall from grace was directed by Rob Reiner and as long as there are no follow up questions, this is a real documentary and these are real people. OK? Rated R. $10. 8pm. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St.

Spontaneous Happiness with Andrew Weil, MD

monday 16

"Wait," you're saying, "Is this that guy with the massive gray beard who appears on television and in magazines from time to time to give us some ideas about healthy living?" Yes. This is the same guy and he's coming to Bend! Andrew Weil, MD, is a foremost authority when it comes to integrated medicine. He's also a best-selling author and a guy with some excellently progressive ideas when it comes to the way we take care of our bodies. For more information, call 541-977-TREE. 5pm. Bend High School, 230 NE 6th St.

Dick Dale Band

tuesday 17

The last time surf-rock guitar legend Dick Dale came to town, we mused about possibly purchasing the boat he had for sale on his website. But alas, we remain boatless here at the Source, but we are still very much supporters of the sort of lightning-fast licks this virtuoso is known to throw down. If you're a guitar player or one who enjoys the mastery of that instrument, we recommend you attend this performance. 8pm. $21 at bendticket.com. 8pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

Anthony B

thursday 19

There is reggae and then there is bad-ass, OG dancehall stuff like the music that Anthony B throws down. Check out the On Stage column this week for more on this Jamaican-born-and-bred genius. Zamunda and Delly Ranx open the show. $21 at bendticket.com. 9pm. Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

The Pimps of Joytime

thursday 19

The Brooklyn funkateers are returning to Bend and we can guarantee they'll get your feet moving. This is the next installment in the Volcanic Funk Party, which also seems like an apt description of this act... read our Sound feature this week and learn why. $12 at bendticket.com. 7pm. Players Bar & Grill, 25 SW Century Dr.
