Even as recently as a decade ago, car sharing most commonly meant lending your car keys to a buddy. Or, perhaps visiting a new town, you would stay in a friendโs friendโs spare room. But that sentiment has grown stridently from a quaint, modernday sense of community to a $25 billion a year โsharingโ economyโand, in this weekโs feature story, our writer Erin Rook reports on the impact that short-term rentals like AirBnB are having on one neighborhood in Bend, and the responseโor so farโlack of response from the city. It is an eye-opening story about a paradigm shift.
Also, this week we welcome a new resident to our townโand to our pagesโwriter Taylor Thompson. Formerly residing in Moab, New Mexico, Thompson moved last week with her four-year old son, and along with a full moving van, she brought her sassy and smart observations about parenthood to Bend, and to our pages.
And speaking of moving, our Outside section has migrated to different real estate in our paper, and in the process expanded to include events listings and also a new writer, Corbin Gentzler, who provides his thoughts on where to best enjoy this weekโs full moon in our โGo Hereโ column.
