In a dramatic reversal of fortune, the bill to protect the Metolius Basin from potentially destructive destination resort development passed the Oregon House today by a vote of 31-28.

According to a post by The Oregonian's Michelle Cole, the victory for HB 3298 came about because Rep. Larry Galizio (D-Tigard) switched his vote. Galizio "said he was convinced following a 'convincing' phone call from the governor and 'an outpouring' of letters and other contacts from the public," Cole writes.

The bill already has passed the state Senate and now goes to Gov. Ted Kulongoski for signature.

Less than a week ago, supporters had all but given up hope of getting the bill through the House and voted to table it to gain time to round up more votes. The move - thanks to the continuing strong public support for the bill - succeeded.
