What a stunner – The Bulletin endorsed John McCain this morning.

The Eye’s immediate impulse was to call circulation and cancel our subscription forthwith. Upon reflection, we decided not to do it because (a) it wouldn’t accomplish anything except to vent our anger, (b) the endorsement is meaningless because the only people who pay attention to Bulletin endorsements would vote for McCain anyway and (c) the rest of the paper contains worthwhile news once in a while, although the idiotorial page has become nothing but right-wing vomit.

Therefore The Eye will continue to be a subscriber, but will never look at the idiotorial page again and will toss the Perspective section of the Sunday paper (including John Costa’s weekly self-congratulatory column) into the recycling bin as soon as it arrives.

The late, lamented Editor Bob Chandler was a staunch Republican but he was a man of integrity and couldn’t bring himself to endorse Ronald Reagan because he thought Reagan was an incompetent boob. The Eye is glad Bob didn’t live to see the Bush presidency. It would’ve killed him.

Meanwhile, as The Bulletin idiotorial page was endorsing McCain, Colin Powell went on “Meet the Press” the morning to endorse Barack Obama. We’ll see who carries more weight.

  1. OMG! The Bulletin not thinking and endorsing McCain! What an amazing concept! Oh, I forgot, they simply MUST pander to their primarily conservative / Republican RE industry advertiser “base”. But what a joke of a news source. One example: compare The Bulletin’s website to the Register-Guard’s website. The R-G site is full of news and (free) information including editorials and letters to the editor while The Bulletin site has only a few ‘free’ articles along with teaser headlines and links to filler articles from the AP – pieces easily obtained from many other (and vastly better) online news sources. And The Bulletin wants to charge for their lousy website? Me thinks “Stupid is as stupid does”.

  2. If you stop reading the idiotorial page what will you write about? Will you miss one of your primary sources for material and ‘inspiration’? In regards to weight carried locally and nationally — Colin wins (even without the endorsement by the Bulletin).

  3. Will not vote for an inexperienced man with so many background hidden possibilities including religion and controversial associations for the highest office in the land. Stupid maybe but assured of background of other candidate. Why won’t they release all info on background of candidates? Not just a local election but of tantamount repercussions.

  4. One of the hilarious, albeit embarrassing, things for our community was John Costa going around the community for the last two years apologizing for endorsing Bush in his second term. He made a very crazy speech at a local Rotary function saying that Bush had betrayed the positions he championed. He still calls himself a Democrat to his staff although every election it’s the same. And why shouldn’t it be. I hope the Bulletin never changes. If they did make any surprising endorsements people would take them seriously. This is the same petty paper that will try to prevent a Central Oregonian from reaching the Treasurer position this election over a personal grudge masquerading as righteous anger. Think about what that would mean for our region if they swayed voters.

  5. I laugh at everyone who reads and agrees with The Source. Bend is such a liberal city that it is almost taboo to endorse the Republican party. If the Bulletin is endorsing McCain, then why doesn’t the Source just endorse Obama and leave it at that. Reading this makes me look at The Source and instantly think that this is some high school drama s**t. Its immature to go off bashing your competition, although its not like it never happens, but do it with class and appeal.

  6. Ok, if anyone really read the article endorsing McCain, you can clearly see their reasons for endorsing McCain. Its not like they just want to push Central Oregonians towards voting for McCain, but they’re giving them reasons why they believe McCain is the right candidate for the Presidency.

“As much as we admire McCainรข โ„ขs political courage, we support him largely because we happen to agree with his positions on those issues that matter most: taxes and the economy, health care, energy and national defense.”

This section, taken directly and unchanged from that article, clearly demonstrates that the Bulletin is interested in the above mentioned issues.

Other reasons stated in the article, tell that McCain has spent many, many years in politics, since 1982 to be specific. He has the military experience to lead our country in a time of war if necessary.

Obama, on the other hand, has spent far less time in the senate, since early 2005, and was part of the Illinois State Legislature from ’97 to ’04. He has absolutely no military experience.

From these points I can clearly see why the Bulletin endorses McCain. He is simply the more qualified candidate, where as Obama has more popularity among voters. For all we know, this could be a repeat 2000 election, where Bush recieved the electoral votes, and Al Gore recieved the popular vote.

So i suggest that The Source should form an opinion about Obama and give their reasons why he should be president.

  7. Steve – This is where the community posts up, not Source writers. I trust that, as in every election, the Source will endorse. As I stated in my previous post, they gave well substantiated reasons for endorsing Bush the last two elections, and I’m they did a good job of crafting a reasoned opinion for McCain. And I’m sure, two years from now if McCain gets elected, Costa will be running around apologizing for that mess as well. With the 24 hour news cycle, no one looks to newspaper endorsements anymore for how to vote – they look to them to see what kind of people are in control of their news. And with this endorsement, what you see is a Bulletin Editorial Board that is not capable of learning from past mistakes. Perhaps no longer capable of learning period.

  8. If the Democrats had a decent candidate maybe intelligent people would endorse him. Obama has no extrordinary qualifications, his only skill is that he is a great bull shitter.

  9. Who cares that a small paper in Central Oregon backed McCain! And even further more, why does it make sense to publicize it even further through our secondary news “Source?”

  10. McCain frequently seems confused and slow in responding to questions be it a press conference or debate situation. Is he possibly suffering from some of the infirmities of age? Palin is clearly not prepared nor informed on the issues. I have always liked and respected McCain but I don’t want Palin as our “accidental” president. BUT TO THE POINT…BEND GIVES EQUAL TIME TO THE LEFTWING (VIA THE LIBERAL SOURCE) AND THE RIGHTWING (THROUGH THE BEND REPUBLICAN NEWLETTER-THE BULL).

I pick up the Source because it is free. I only subscribe to the Bull when using my wood burning stove in the winter.

  11. over the 143 days as a State Senator Obama has done not one good thing for the people of Chicago,Ill.
Only raised taxes , help to get hired into city jobs folks with criminal back grounds as favors, wrote 2 books about himself with help from his Minister friend of 20 years the bigot and white hater . He had shown no interest to right any new bill or sponcer one no law created has no business sence ,
no war time history to him, like his wife is not happy with America , Amazingly stupid Americans like his speeches so that must qualify him ? This is how we ended up with Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton . Wish
people voting would first see the candidates real back ground qualifications base their vote on this not how they give speeches . Obama and Biden are two idiots certainly not qualified for the Presidency.

  12. I moved here two years ago and noticed the right leaning folks right away. I am sure they think McCain-Palin are the bees knees. If they really loved our country they would question the tatics of the Republicans who have used such hatefilled words to incite their base words which upon further review are baseless.

Vote for someone on policy but not on slurs. This is certainly not my father’s Republican party. He was a life long Republican who would be very disappointed in his party.

I have made up my mind to vote Democrat as I am backing intelligence, calmness in adversity and a man who actually worked through hardships in his life as opposed to McCain who grew up on the nickel of the US government in naval ports. The Bulletin is a small time, small town paper that carries little weight beyound this town. I get the paper and will not stop but it certainly leaves a lot to be desired as a home town newspaper.

  13. “a man who actually worked through hardships in his life as opposed to McCain who grew up on the nickel of the US government in naval ports.”

Is this some kind of bad joke or what? Trust me Pat,John McCain earned every penny of his compensation during his career. Every military person does. What have YOU done for your country that qualifies you to call out John McCain as a free loader? John McCain served his nation honorably and with great courage and dignity during a time of war. He spent 5 years in the Hanoi Hilton enduring real, actual torture; heinous acts of violence few of the rest of us could even comprehend. He and every other current and former member of our nation’s wonderful military have done more for this country than that wind bag Obama would do in a thousand years.

  14. The Bulletin’s endorsement for McCain didn’t mention Palin once. I suppose it is better to say nothing if you can’t say anything positive. I can’t vote for McCain because of her!

  15. “Any chance The Source can go daily?”

I’d say roughly the same chance as a snowball surviving in Hell. But you’d better ask Aaron Switzer that question.

  16. “I can’t vote for McCain because of her!”

There are a lot of independents and Republicans saying that. The choice of Palin excited the “base” but turned off everybody else, it seems. A real dumb move by McCain — one of many, many such moves in this campaign. You have to question whether a man has the judgment to be president if he keeps making rash, impulsive decisions like this.

  17. According to Editor and Publisher, 51 daily newspapers have endorsed Obama to 19 for McCain. The Chicago Tribune, which never before endorsed a Democrat in its 161-year history, endorsed Obama. The Anchorage Daily News also endorsed Obama.
