It's the first Friday of 2014! Here's what's happening in the news.

While Oregon is experiencing record low snow packs and one of the driest winters in years, the Northeast was hit with a massive winter storm that dumped nearly two feet of snow in Boston yesterday. Here's a map of the storm. Yay winter!

Fukushima—now sweltered with high radiation levels after the 2011 earthquake and disaster at the nuclear power plant—is still struggling to recover with a 20-mile evacuation zone around the plant that could take up to 40 years to be safe for inhabitants.

In sad news...James Avery, the actor best known for playing Will Smith's cranky uncle on "Fresh Prince of Bel Air," died yesterday. Here are 10 life lessons learned from Uncle Phil, thanks for the laughs Mr. Avery.
