Chris Piper, candidate for Bend City Council position 3, joins Editor Nicole Vulcan of the Source Weekly for “My View,” a video series inviting local candidates to share their views on a host of topics ahead of the 2020 election, while sitting in front of a view they enjoy.
Piper chose to meet at Bend’s McKay Park, where he was happy to have implemented a 4-hour parking program to help manage traffic near the busy Whitewater Park.
Stay tuned for the Source Weekly’s endorsements of local candidates, on stands Oct. 22, 2020. The My View video series will continue with video interviews for local city, county and state races, all the way up to the 2020 election.
COVID protocols: Since the interviews take place outdoors, the Source team invited each candidate to go without a mask, so voters can get to know them and see their faces as they talk.
This article appears in Sep 10-16, 2020.

why is this self described leader not wearing a mask. Most of us who actually lead people lead by example. Shame on this guy in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic. Credit to the interviewer for wearing a mask.
Chris Piper did nothing to stop tourism while in a pandemic and now our children are not back in school. This is because of lack of leadership and foresight from the town council. You all have put children and families at risk on many levels not to mention what this is doing to marginalized communities. You don’t have my vote.
Chris, why don’t you tax all the people moving from California, Seattle etc. with wealth and buying high end homes and causing infrastructure impact by having a luxury property tax on homes being built in places like, Tree Farm, Discovery West & Tetherow. Also developers and builders should also absorb this tax as well. I would be happy to pay a luxury tax if I am bringing impact to Bend. This tax should not be placed on long term residents.
In regards to ICE situation, you are just giving lip service. This was a sweep and you know it. You should have been there and being present for our community. You were not prepared and again a leader needs to be prepared in these situations. You should not even have to put a Justice & Equity Commission together, J&E should always be a part of the process.
Glad you are willing to have a conversation about defunding the police, since that is your duty Chris. Police department should have body cams. There should be more resources towards mental crisis, homelessness and drug addiction and that should not be a part of the police department. Instead of buying a patrol car, buy body cams for instance. Take funding from PD and place these funds towards mental crisis, drug addiction interventions and homelessness.
Infrastructure and population growth: Stop building high end housing and allowing developers to get rich and creating more inequity in our community and causing wildlife impact. Affordable housing should be focused on. Affordability is quickly becoming an issue if not already. Stop building golf courses and high end homes and people from California and Seattle will stop moving here and causing more inequity and impacting our infrastructure.
Megan has my vote!
Why should the long term residents of Bend pay for your focus of growth to the wealthy, without tapping into their financial advantages, and why are you not charging the developers more to accommodate the transportation issues, which they create. And, why does the city council not commit to the length of this bond…20 – 30 years of our taxes. And, when the property values go up, our taxes for this bond will go up. You want the community to pay for the growth without tapping into the developer. I vote no!
Chascoe- please note the very visible disclaimer at the start of the video as well as in the description here, which says we invited the candidates to go without a mask so that the public could see them. As this is an endorsement interview, we felt it important for voters to get to know each candidate. As this takes place outdoors, the candidates are not violating any rules or guidelines by going without a mask.
Nicole,
My point was intended to be that a city leader should be leading by example. If you disagree with this, I would like to know why. Again, thank-you for wearing a mask and thereby leading by example.
