Unless you’re stranded in a woodstove-heated cabin outside Sisters you’ve probably had the chance to gather that the only acceptable topic of conversation over the past few days in Bend is the weather, or specifically the temperature. (It got really cold, dontcha know?) This is more evidence that, despite our traction tires and abundant mountain snowfall, Bend is still not a winter town. We drive around in blinding snowstorms without our lights on. (Hey, I can see fine!) We don’t change the summer diesel out of our school bus fleet, stranding students on street corners.

We walk outside in January dressed in t-shirts, apparently unaware of such technological advances as coats – let alone hats and gloves. But fer crissakes folks can we please stop filling our Facebook posts, e-mails and workplace conversations with more “master of the obvious” notes on the temperature? Yes, it’s cold outside folks. It’s called winter. It’ll be here for two more months. Check your calendar. Get over it. WTF?

  1. Problem is, it’s still fall and many weather records were just set on the West coast. So yeah this was not typical to have day time temps hovering near 0F.

  2. Actually, it IS normal. Back in-the-day, these cold snaps would often last for weeks… the winter of ’78-’79 two solid months hovering around zero. I was kickin’ myself in the hind-quarters earlier today that I didn’t bet somebody a beer – it was pushin’ fifty a week ago and it would be pushin’ fifty again in a week. Probably push fifty tomorrow.

  3. I post that stuff to keep my out of state relatives from visiting. An ‘oooh it’s so cold’ followed by a picture of my thermometer pegged at -10 posted on Facebook keeps them away allowing me to have the holiday season of choice and stress free.
