A year ago a father and son were mountain bike riding on the Maston trail when the father heard a bullet zing overhead. He braked to a halt and grabbed his son off his bike and both fell to the ground.
Firing Line: guns ablaze at the Maston
Lust List Was Limp
I must say I am quite unimpressed by “The Lust List” in the Love Issue. If that is really the best Central Oregon has to offer, we all need to quit life and move away. I can name hundreds of people that are hotter or just better than half of the winners of the survey. A handbag designer is not a celebrity. And if Nicole wins the hottest body, why did you only show her face? That doesn't make sense. And why don't we have a female athlete. Working at Helly Hanson does not make someone an athlete. We have some wonderful and beautiful athletes here in town. And lastly, if that is a hot athletic trainer, I am never working out at a gym again.
It's not all bad. Some I can really understand. Nobody will deny Makayla is hot, and I can see Max, Jodie or that Todd guy. Nicole looks great – despite not being able to see her body. How about showing the people as they are described. Singing, running, bartending, etc. so those of us who don't know who they are might understand.
Dick Cheney, Again and Again…Why?
Ever since he got out of the office of vice-president of the United States, Dick Cheney has engaged into some of the rudest and ruthless campaign of criticism of the Obama administration. So consistent is the once reclusive and unapologetic Cheney that the sane part of the American electorate is left asking why? Why the personal vilification of the young President and his entire program of government even in areas that policies are identical to those followed by the Bush White House?
The prosecution of the war in Afghanistan and Iraq, the treatment of the “Christmas Day bomber”, the bailout of Wall Street all follow the blueprint of George W. Bush and his team. Yet, Cheney and the cadre of Republican attack dogs denounce every step and thus invest in a process shameless double standard fiercely adhered to by the extreme right of the party and the new darlings of that extreme right, the tea party fanatics.
Gay Marriage Gets its Day In Court
My Jan. 14 letter in The Source mentioned that equality for gays had never been tested in federal court. As is turns out, there's a case right now, which was filed in the interim between when I submitted my letter and when it was published. The case is Perry v. Schwarzenegger, which challenges Prop. 8, the California ballot initiative.
Attorneys for the case are Ted Olson and David Boies. They will attempt to prove that “laws banning gay marriage not only don't make sense, they are unconstitutional.” This case is not just about gay marriage, it's, “fighting a new battle; equal rights for all.” If it's successful, and it may go all the way to the Supreme Court, it will knock down all existing laws and constitutional amendments that deny gay equality.

Sasquatch Lineup Announced: My Morning Jacket, Pavement, Massive Attack, Ween and more
Summer festival season is still a ways off, but it feels much closer now that the Sasquatch! Music Festival has unveiled its downright impressive lineup.
Taking place over Memorial Day Weekend (May 29 through 31) up at the Gorge Amphitheater, the festival boasts arguably the strongest lineup of its eight-year history with headliners like My Morning Jacket, Pavement, Vampire Weekend, MGMT and plenty others, like The Hold Steady, for one.
Five Rings: Non-Medal Winter Olympic Moments-Part II
Easily the most fun Winter Olympics I ever worked were the 1988 Calgary Games. The organizers of those Games came up with the brilliant idea of erecting a big tent at most venues for pre- and post-event parties.
Video From the WinterFest Music Stage
If you were one of the several thousand folks who descended on the Old Mill District for last weekend’s Bend WinterFest, you probably saw some of action below.
Friday night featured a headlining set from Bend favorites, The Gourds, making for a packed stage as the skiers jammed the rail behind the crowd.
A Ride For Life: Back to mountain biking after cancer
On November 9, 2008 one of my favorite mountain biking partners called to say that he couldn't ride that day as he was dealing with a bad strep throat.
It became so bad that two days later he went to see a doctor and by day's end had been given the news that he had stage three, rapidly advancing to stage four, throat cancer.
WinterFest Music Video Preview: The Gourds, Hell’s Belles
It looks like that nasty little wet burst of stormy weather has passed and things are looking food for tonight’s kick off of WinterFest.
While many out there are heading down to the Old Mill District to watch the always insanely popular Rail Jam, others (maybe you) will be there to take in some first-class music.
