Poor Man’s Whiskey Makes Us Ponder the Pink Floyd / Wizard of Oz Connection
Bay-area Americana rockers Poor Man’s Whiskey are bringing their “Dark Side of the Moonshine” project, which I wrote about in this week’s paper, to the Domino Room Saturday night. The show – a psychedelically bluegrass interpretation of the seminal Pink Floyd record – has a strong focus on Wizard of Oz themes and costumes, playing on the well-known, widely experienced urban legend that Dark Side and Oz, if properly synchronized, create one fantastic piece of spaced-out art that has been dubbed “Dark Side of the Rainbow.
Time for a Pay-as-We-Grow Plan
Last week, like all Deschutes County property owners, I received the most depressing piece of mail of the year: my annual tax bill.
This morning The Bulletin had more depressing news.
Hope for Fall/Winter Music: Son Volt, The Gourds, Swollen Members, Dropkick Murphys, Eek-a-Mouse
Winter, traditionally, has been the time for Central Oregon music junkies to hunker down in the basement with a stack of beloved albums rather than hit the bars and clubs for live shows. This year, however is looking pretty promising, especially knowing a band like Son Volt is coming to Bend before the year is out.
Bend’s Historic Beautiful Couple: George Palmer Putnam and Amelia Earhart
Hollywood’s hype machine is currently running on high touting Amelia the upcoming biopic on the life of famed 1930s aviatrix Amelia Earhart. From interviews with actress Hilary Swank, who plays Earhart, it’s clear the film tries to be true to Earhart’s rise to fame and eventual disappearance over the Pacific on her 1937 around the world flight.
Bend Holds Back On Parking Fees After Businesses Revolt
After receiving a petition from incensed business owners, city officials decided to put a parking fee increase on hold until they have more time to discuss the plan with downtown stakeholders.
City council officials were scheduled to discuss a staff proposal to do away with the free two-hours of parking currently offered in both the north and south Mirror pond lots, but yanked the item from the agenda after roughly two dozen business owners and managers signed a petition that was submitted to the city through the Bend Chamber of Commerce.
A Pandemic of Paranoia
In the early 19th Century, after Edward Jenner’s smallpox vaccine came into wide use, the first anti-vaccination movement sprung up. Its adherents’ warnings ranged from the legitimate (vaccination could, as they claimed, lead to serious infections, due to the unsanitary conditions under which it was performed) to the downright nutty (the vaccine, which was derived from cowpox, would cause patients to sprout cow-like appendages).
Strolling Shevlin
There are probably people who, like me, who tend to take some of our local special places for granted. Special places like Shevlin Park.
Pickin' on Floyd: Poor Man's Whiskey brings their take on Dark Side to town…with lasers, of course
A few years ago, Jason Beard found himself in his garage late at night as Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon played in the background. This really isn't unique – 30 percent of American males have probably been privy to a late-night Dark Side garage session. But what happened next is where things get interesting. Surrounded by recording equipment and instruments, Beard picked up his mandolin and started playing along. It's an odd marriage – the congress off a bluegrassy instrument and rock's seminal piece of psychedlia – but it worked for Beard, a founding member of Bay Area genre-smashers Poor Man's Whiskey, and by morning he'd outlined a bluegrass adaptation of the album.
From the UK to the Moon, Here's The Heavy
From time to time, a show gets booked in town that causes us to first drop a “WTF?” bomb aloud, and then hit the webernet to make sure this is really, truly, actually happening – for real. That's essentially the reaction that surged through our office when the Silver Moon's talent buyer, Cassie Moore, dropped us an e-mail announcing the UK soul rockers The Heavy would be playing a Wednesday night show at the venue.
The Heavy made a big splash at 2008's South by Southwest festival and have since gained a following in the states that will likely grow in the coming weeks and months given that the band just released its second full-length record, The House that Dirt Built, which dropped just last week on Counter Records. The band combines a dance-o-licious soulful energy with a gritty rock and roll foundation. It's like the Black Keys go back in time to the heyday of Motown and bring Beck along in the DeLorean for inspiration.
