Biscuits and Beatdowns: A neurotic's quest for Best of Show at the Deschutes County Fair

“This is great! This is everybody's dream,” said Linda Scott, first-time baked goods judge at the 2009 Deschutes County Fair.
From 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. the day before the fair kicked off this year, Linda tasted every single entry in the senior and adult categories. Linda's parents ran Gibb's Bakery in Redmond for 45 years, so the woman knows her way around a pie or two. In five hours she sampled nut pies and divinity, cakes and fudge, enough chocolate cookies to satiate the most vicious bout of PMS.
Sitting across the table from her, I lost count after the first dozen yeast rolls and cheese muffins, and a white-blonde confection straight from a retro Betty Crocker cookbook, gleaming under the florescence like a '50s pin-up queen.

Conservatives Find Something New to Whine About

Right-wing radio host and blogger Bill Post of Salem has uncovered a horrendous political scandal: Jim Bernau, CEO of Willamette Valley Vineyards, appears to be a closet liberal.
Post was able to break this blockbuster of a story, according to his blog, because an alert listener tipped him “that there was a bus at the McMinnville David Wu Town Hall meeting Monday night that was, as the listener described, 'filled with Obama Health Care supporters with ACORN connections and the bus was sponsored by Willamette Valley Vineyards.

Rumor mill turns

I had a chance last night to vet at least a couple of rumors about downtown last night at our Best Of party. I talked to one business owner about a recent local blog report that the downtown chocolate shop, Chocolat e Gateaux,
is closing soon and that Astro and Marz may not be far behind as the landlord pursues a plan to remodel the Minnesota Ave.
