Wine dinners seem to be gaining momentum as we head into spring with CHOW, Bistro Corlise, Jen's Garden and Jackalope planning monthly regional or varietals themed meals with an expert on hand to describe the wines and pairings. Jackalope continues to offer cooking classes, which have been wildly popular over the last two months. Both the wine dinners and the classes sell out quickly.
Spring is also bringing with it extended hours for many local spots. Townshend's Tea has extended their weekday hours until 11pm for a little late-night tea sipping. Zydeco is now open Monday nights, and Fireside Red has started serving lunches daily and Sunday brunch.

Chow Down : Chow Sheds Light on the Evening
Chow Aims For the Perfect Pairing.Anybody who has talked to me in the last few months about new restaurants, knows how I feel about Chow. Breakfast and lunch at this relatively new eatery are fabulous. There are plenty of standards on the menu like biscuits and gravy and eggs benedicts, but the variety, quality and reasonable prices are what keep bringing me back.
For lunch the multi-grain salad with fried chickpeas is a must, as well as the pumpkin gnocchi with crispy parma ham.

From Burning Man to You: The exclamation is necessary with Albino!
Free to be you and me.There's no shortage o' Bendites who make the pilgrimage to Nevada's Burning Man Festival each summer. And those who head south for a few days of mind expansion and desert wandering during the festival likely have come across the tunes of Albino! (Note: We don't mean to scream that sentence at you, the San Francisco-based band uses the exclamation point in their official title.) And, for all those who shy away from the Burning Man scene, Albino! is bringing its world beats to the streets this spring.
The 12-piece Afrobeat ensemble frequents festivals across the country and is known for its high-energy tracks and exhilarating live shows. Albino! is currently on tour to promote the release of a new live album featuring saxophonist Karl Denson (the same Karl D who recently jammed in Bend with the Greyboy Allstars).
Staying Different and the Same: Talking folk music with Arlo
A long way from alice’s restaurant.Legendary folk hero and activist Arlo Guthrie is coming to town to play a benefit for KPOV (106.7 FM), and we wanted just a bit of his time, say ten minutes or so to catch up with him - and he gave us almost half an hour, and probably would have stayed on the line for half the day if we asked kindly. Here's a look at what he had to say about his music, the music of others, and everything else in between.
Looks like you're on the road for a while now?
Jeez, it's going into next year and beyond, so it's getting a little nuts. Where are you calling me from again?
Bend, Oregon.
Oh, Bend. We're looking forward to getting up there.
Buckethead Rules!
A couple of video clips from Buckethead’s performance last Friday at the Domino Room. And a shout out to Random Presents for bringing this gotta-see-it-to-believe it show to Bend.
Deschutes Gets Dissed by Fannie and Freddie
When Fannie and Freddie make a move, the real estate industry takes notice. But when they tightened the rules for mortgages in Deschutes County, our local daily didn't bat an eyelash.
Bulletin Firing Makes Statewide News
The story of a Bulletin reporter who was fired after complaining about how the paper was spinning its real estate coverage went statewide this afternoon when Oregon Public Broadcasting picked it up.
Get the lead out!Lead shot remains a significant danger to waterfowl and wildlife
Golden Eagle suffering from lead poisoning. (Note scars on toes from walking on its knuckels.) As if shootings, electrocution and collisions with vehicles are not
enough for eagles to cope with, now portentous lead poisoning has
reared its ugly head.
Lead is a toxic metal deposited in the
environment through hunting, fishing and recreational shooting, and
will not break down into less-toxic compounds and will persist
indefinitely. Lead toxicity can have lethal consequences that
compromise avian survival and reproductive success. Consequently, lead
has killed a variety of birds, and it won't be too long before it will
travel through the food chain and seep into the human body.
Hoop, There it is: A night in the Bend hooping scene
Mollie Hogan knows how to hoop it up with the best of them.A passing train blocks the sunset, momentarily dimming the Mountain
Comfort Warehouse, but the rhythm of the train can't compete with the
tribal beats emanating from a small stereo system. Twenty-eight bodies
fill the warehouse with spinning hoops gyrating around their waists.
Some of the Hoopers (don't call them HulaHoopers-that's patented by
Wham-O…think "disc golf" versus Frisbee) move with ballet grace, some
channel a funky hand jive, some are as sensual as belly dancers, and a
few are still looking for a groove. They've been hooping spontaneously
for the last five minutes, starting to shed layers, dewy faces grinning.
