Redwood Son & The Forestry
wednesday 13
Singer/ songwriter Josh Malm has the rare ability to combine alt-Americana integrity with pop vibrancy. His music has the light playfulness of Jack Johnson, if Johnson had been inspired by tall trees rather than sandy beaches. Voted โBest New Artist” of the Portland Music Awards in 2011, Redwood Sonโs simple catchy and folky songs unravel the yarns of Malmโs childhood in Northern California and beyond. Free. All ages. 7pm. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.

First Friday Art Walk
friday 1
Thereโs the art, thereโs the walkingโwhatโs not to love? We strongly recommend visiting the Oxford Hotel to peruse the Lives on the Line exhibit we profile in our Culture section this week. While youโre there take a listen to Christian Lindquist on the harp and check out his custom furniture pieces. Old Mill and Northwest Crossing are getting in on the First Friday action these days, too. Youโll find live music and other festivities in those locales. 5 to 9 p.m. Friday. Downtown Bend, Old Mill and Northwest Crossing.

The Two Escobars
wednesday 23
Weโd never heard of narco-soccer before researching this little film, but now weโre fascinated. The term refers to the shadowy connections between drugs and sports in Columbia in the early 1990s, when Pablo Escobar ruled the Columbian drug underworld and Andres Escobar (unrelated) ruled the soccer pitch, that is, until he was murdered. This movie investigates the dirtiness. Free. 6pm. Boyle Education Center, COCC, 2600 NW College Way.
Our Picks for 05/17 – 05/24
Pedal-Driven, A Bikeumentary
thursday 17
This behind-the-scenes documentary highlights an emerging conflict birthed in our national forestsโwho gets to use the trail? Follow a band of freeride mountain bikers, the skate-punk equivalents of the cycling world, who argue that they belong. Unfortunately, the U.S. Forest Service doesnโt see it that way, despite the two groupsโ common groundโa desire to preserve public land for the use and enjoyment of the American people. Expect radical scenery, freeride mania and a compelling story about conflicting user groups. A benefit for the Central Oregon Trail Alliance! $5. 9pm. McMenamins, 700 NW Bond St.
Our Picks for 05/09 – 05/17
The 44’s
wednesday 9
The traditional, raw sound of this Los Angeles-based blues band will transport you back to a smoky Chicago tavern circa 1950. Their music is packed with the sort of guitar solos and harmonica riffs that you'd expect from a band that plays vintage instruments.
Our Picks for 05/03-05/09
KPOV Simulcast of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival
thursday 3
