Thanksgiving Eve!

wednesday 26

This isn't a specific event, per say, but rather recognition of a widely celebrated yet hardly mentioned holiday called Thanksgiving Eve. Every year on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, revelers from in and out of town flood the bars with the knowledge that they have the following day off (even if it means some semi-stressful family get-togethers).

Our Picks for the Week of 11/19-11/27

The Sofa Kings
friday 21
You've likely seen MC Mystic behind
the turntables as well as the microphone, but most don't know the dude
can also play the drums like nobody's business. He'll show off his
beatkeeping prowess with this new band, the Sofa Kings, the
female-fronted outfit that's debuting at the newly reopened Pyro Lounge
at the Old Mill Martini Bar. That's a pretty clever name for a venue
that was closed due to a fire not too long ago. 9pm. Pyro Lounge at The
Old Mill Martini Bar, 360 SW Powerhouse Dr.
Will Durst
friday 21
If
you didn't laugh enough during the past election, check out Durst's
bipartisan take on political hilarity. Check out the Culture section
for more info. 21 and over. 8pm. $25/advance, $28/door. Tower Theatre,
835 NW Wall St., 317-0700.

Drift
thursday 13
Summer-run steelhead are spread throughout
the lower river and most local rivers and lakes are still producing
good trout, but it's time to put the fly rod down - at least for a few
hours as the latest fish porn feature rolls into town in the form of
Drift, an hour-long fly fishing documentary that includes footage from
right here in Central Oregon. The segment, which highlights the
increasingly popular sub-sport of spey fishing, was filmed last year on
the Deschutes River with legendary guides and spey gurus John and Amy
Hazel. The film was produced in conjunction with The Drake, a
Colorado-based fly fishing magazine, and the local showing benefits the
Upper Deschutes Wastershed Council and Oregon Trout. Doors 5:30, Film
6pm. $10 McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.. Advanced
tickets at ortrout.org.
Music For The Fallen
friday 14
Veteran's
Day just passed and the local music scene is paying tribute to the
families of Central Oregon's fallen soldiers with this crossover show
featuring music ranging from metal to hip-hop. The lineup includes:
Relative, No Cash Value, Snap Point, Pov City, Trevor G and The
Collektive Cartel. 8pm. $10, $1 off with non-perishable food donation.
Domino Room, 51 NW Greenwood Ave.

HDC Halloween Party
and Drag Show
friday 31
In the first of
the many, many Halloween events we're picking out for you (there's even
more on our special Halloween section on page 16!), the Human Dignity
Coalition is throwing their annual Halloween bash featuring PDX's
Poisonwaters and friends, after party with Grove DJs, live auction,
dancing and more. It's pretty much a guaranteed good time. And wear a
costume for crying out loud - trust us, you'll fit in no matter what
you wear. 21 and over. 7:30pm. $26. Midtown Ballroom, 51 NW Greenwood
Ave.
Power 94 Monster Ball
friday 31
The notion of
spending Halloween night in an old church has a frightening tinge to
it, but perhaps not as much if you realize the church is the feel-good
domain of the Old Stone Church, which is being transformed into a
"haunted" dance club. There should be plenty of thumping music for your
gyrating pleasure and you can get in on the $2,000 in prizes by wearing
your scariest, naughtiest and/or funniest costumes. 8pm-2am. Old Stone
Church. 157 NW Franklin Ave.
Rocky Horror Picture Show
friday 31
Last
month we got word that the Tower was hosting a hard rock show and now
we've learned they're playing Rocky Horror Picture Show. Man, things
are suddenly getting urban at the Tower and we like it. Dress up like
your favorite character and, well …if you've been to a screening of
this cult classic before, you should know what to do. Costume contest!
And promoters want you to know that this is a dry show, even if it is
21 and over. Tower Theatre, 835 NW Wall St. 317-0700. $10/adult,
$7/students (with ID).

Catie Curtis
friday 17
This Boston native plays a sweetly blended mix of melodic vocals and crisp Americana guitar to produce a thriving brand of folk rock that you might have heard on Dawson's Creek. She's coming to the Old Stone as part of her national tour and for the female singer songwriter junkies out there, this is a must-see show.

Our Picks for the week of 9/5-9/11

Person People

friday 5

Person People was originally slated for a Show Us Your Spokes benefit date at Parrilla and more than a few people were bummed to see their name pulled from that bill. BUT, BUT, BUT wouldn't ya know it, Bend's high-profile, high member count hip-hop super group simply moved their appearance back a week to coincide with a fundraiser for the Division Street Skatepark, which you might have read about in the Source a couple weeks ago. So, go get yourself some Person People, because these guys don't play all that often, but when they do, they bring the friggin' heat. 7pm. Parrilla Grill, 635 NW 14th St.

Sisters Folk Festival

friday-sunday 5-7

In its 13th year, the Sisters Folk Fest is as lively as ever and again taking over the quaint cowboy confines of little ol' Sisters with folk music of all shapes and sizes. Turn the page and learn more about this stalwart of Central Oregon's musical summer. Visit sistersfolkfestival.org for tickets, lineup and more valuable information.

Sheryl Crow

thursday 28

This summer has been all about masculine-dominated shows, but thankfully, one Sheryl Crow is coming to the big Schwab stage to do a thing or two about that. Turn the page and read more. 5pm. $85/reserved, $45/general. Les Schwab Amphitheater, 344 Shevlin Hixon Dr.

Empty Space Orchestra

friday 29

A lot of Bend's music community had this date circled on the calendar as the night that our very own hip-hop super group, Person People, was going to play in the Parrilla back yard. OK, so plans changed and PP will be taking the stage next week (9/5) but the Empty Space Orchestra is filling in. Despite some lineup changes, expect ESO to bring funk fusion and all sorts of whirling soundscapes to the outdoor venue to close out the Show Us Your Spokes concert series. Does this mean summer is over? Hmmm…kind of. 7pm. $4, $5 if you show up by car. Parrilla Grill. 635 NW 14th St.
