Richard “Ric” Nowak, who ran Country by Design Antiques in downtown Redmond, passed away June 17.
Nowak was well known throughout Central Oregon through his roles on the Redmond City Council, the Deschutes County Landmarks Commission, the Redmond Historical Society, and on the Redmond Chamber of Commerce and Convention Visitors Bureau Board.
In 2009, he was named Redmond’s Citizen of the Year by the Redmond Chamber of Commerce and CVB.
As a young reporter I would often visit Ric in his antique shop where next to the glass cases of figurines and flower vases he would expound on various facets of life in Redmond and offer up great story tips. His warm smile is easy to recall even now, seven years later.
He will be missed by many.
A graveside service will be held Friday, June 22 at Redmond Memorial Cemetery at 2pm. A gathering will follow at Timbers in Redmond where attendees will be encouraged to share their memories of Ric.

I am happy to have found this nice article about Ric with his picture. I was really bummed to go into the antique store today to find out the belated news that he had passed away. I always enjoyed chatting with him at the store. He sold me one the first antique purse I had ever bought (which is my collecting niche) about four years ago and in March this year when I stopped by with my niece, he let her pick out an arrowhead that she had been lusting over and have it for free. It really made her day. I’m glad I got to meet Ric, I will truly miss him.
