Reflections on the Top Chef weekend

I am still reeling from the amazing weekend and Top Chef Competition. What presented itself as a wonderful opportunity to showcase some of the finest local chefs and food quickly turned into much more.

In Boise For Wilco: A Profession Of Love

What’s a music editor in Bend to do when his favorite band won’t come to his town? He goes to them of course! I’m sitting in The District Coffee House in downtown Boise as I prepare to see Wilco, “The Hardest Working Rock Band in America,” tonight at the Idaho Botanical Gardens and I can’tโ€ฆ

Police ID Awbrey Shooting Victim

Bend police released more details this afternoon on a Awbrey Butte home break-in that took a deadly turn late Saturday night. Police said that 33-year-old Shane Michael Munoz of Bend was shot and killed during an altercation with homeowner Kevin Marshall Perry.

Rain be damned, Bite of Bend is the place to be today with a full slate of family activities, entertainment and food, food, food. Here’s a sampling of staff picks for today’s events:   Top Chef Comp: Eight of Bend’s kitchen maestros square off in a head-to-head cookoff, a la Iron Chef.

City Council Election Heating Up (And It’s Only June!)

The race for open Bend City Council positions in the November election just got more interesting. Bend developer, downtown building owner and Bend Planning Commission Chair Doug Knight announced today he will terminate a campaign against current councilor Kathie Eckman and instead run for the position currently held by Jeff Eager.

Crux Fermentation Opening Soon

Alright, so the photo sucks, but the beer was good. Our intrepid Source drinking team hit up Crux yesterday during one of their soft opening events leading up to the grand opening on June 30.

McKenzie Pass Opens Today

A relatively average late winter and early spring, allowed state highway managers to open the scenic McKenzie pass to vehicle traffic Thursday morning. The highway has been closed since mid-November and opens roughly on schedule, but more than a month earlier than its latest opening in 1999 when crews didn’t get the road open untilโ€ฆ

Council Plays Santa Claus with Unexpected Revenue

The city pulled in roughly $2 million more in revenue than expected this year. The cash, which comes mostly from an increase in tax revenues, gives the Bend City Council a chance to play Santa Claus—a rare role for the council, which has governed through some of the worst of an economic recession.

Junk on Downtown Sidewalks A Problem

Earlier this year, the owner of a shop downtown stacked her snow tires on the sidewalk outside her door and tried to sell them.  That and all the other random uses downtown business owners are finding for sidewalks—folding tables, racks of clothes, brochure displays—is a problem, representatives of the Bend Downtowner’s Association told the Bendโ€ฆ

Former Redmond Citizen of the Year Dies

Richard “Ric” Nowak, who ran Country by Design Antiques in downtown Redmond, passed away June 17. Nowak was well known throughout Central Oregon through his roles on the Redmond City Council, the Deschutes County Landmarks Commission, the Redmond Historical Society, and on the Redmond Chamber of Commerce and Convention Visitors Bureau Board.

Crazy Delicious Re-opens!

Crazy Delicious is open again! But look for the cart in a new location near the corner of Galveston Avenue and 12th Street, kind of across from 10 Barrel.  The owner of the blue and green food cart famous for the chicken waffle sandwiches drenched in lime syrup said he plans to stay in theโ€ฆ

The Missing Part of the Gun Violence Equation

James Williamsโ€™ โ€œStand Down or Stand Your Ground?โ€ (the Source Weekly, 7 June 2012) omits a statistic that fairly screams for inclusion and would provide an absolutely necessary context within which to evaluate the issue.ย  He states that while there were an average of 12 โ€œjustifiable homicidesโ€ in Florida during the period 2000 to 2004,โ€ฆ

Of Death, Taxes and Tim Knopp

Nothing in life is certain, they say, except death and taxes. Conservatives havenโ€™t found a way to exempt rich people from death yet, but theyโ€™re doing their damnedest to make sure they never have to pay taxes. One of the right-wingersโ€™ favorite targets in this crusade is the estate tax, or โ€œdeath tax,โ€ as theyโ€ฆ

Mamet Speak: Take a chance on Oleanna

David Mamet’s Oleanna is not an easy play. It’s filled with big ideas and respects the audience enough to let us find our own meaning. Oleanna is, at heart, about feeling powerless and the lengths one will go to in order to gain some control. It’s also a post-feminist fable about the impenetrable boundary ofโ€ฆ

Pen Pals Behind Bars

Have I mentioned I have a lot of readers in prison? It makes sense if you think about it: I watch tons of TV, they watch tons of TVโ€ฆ I make wine in my toilet, they make wine in their toiletโ€ฆ BUT! Whatโ€™s interesting is that the incarcerated readership of I Love Televisionโ„ข is almostโ€ฆ

Plastic Fantastics: Recreational kayaks rule the waters

Ten years ago during an interview at an outdoor industry trade show, a kayak manufacturing company president somewhat sheepishly admitted that, while a high percentage of his companyโ€™s ad budget went to promoting whitewater kayaking, for every one whitewater boat the company sold his company moved another 40 recreational kayaks. Today, that ratio is probablyโ€ฆ
