On the move
Ponch’s Place is undergoing a transformation. The brick-and-mortar beverage pavilion at the food truck lot is closing Aug. 7 due to ongoing staffing shortages. A note online says food trucks remain open; however, some have relocated. The Tin Pig is now at Ballers & Brews. The cart, open for nearly a decade, serves hand-breaded fried chicken strips, Nashville-style sandwiches and burgers. It’s been voted Best Fried Chicken by Source readers for the past five years.
One hell of a ride
Dump City Dumplings announced it’s closing at the end of August. Sticking it out for 17 years, during highs and lows, the owners, in a social media post, say it’s time to turn in.
“We managed to keep our boat afloat through some pretty crazy moments; the roller coaster of Covid, shoveling our downtown corner after beastly snow storms (kinda miss those?), a food cart that tried to steal both that spot and our dumpling customers(!), encroaching forest fires that added a new level of AQI severity to the scale, a complete totality eclipse AND our own attempts at learning how to run a business, all while having a lot of fun serving you and working with some incredible people. We never would have gotten anywhere near this far without such incredible support from such an incredible community.”
The message addresses the grueling work of the food industry and admiration for its comrades in the service industry.
“It has been hard work these nearly two decades, work that cost our bodies and our hearts alike, work that didn’t always turn out the way we hoped, but work that was worth it for a chance to be part of this wonderful, vibrant and occasionally very silly town.”
Bagel bound
Haven Bagel & Coffee has opened a west side location on Century Drive near OSU-Cascades. It’s the second location for the farm-to-table bagel and coffee shop. The eastside spot, open since 2024, at SE Reed Market and 27th Street often has a line out the door. Daily bagel flavors include pepperoncini garlic Swiss, cranberry orange, cheddar scallion, gluten free everything along with traditional flavors. Weekend additions include gluten free cinnamon raisin, onion, honey wheat and pumpernickel. A variety of bagel sandwiches, tartines and parfaits are also on the menu along with an espresso bar.
