Ethan Maffey
Both a writer and a fan of vinyl records since age 5, it wasn't until nearly three decades later that Oregon Native Ethan Maffey derived a plan to marry the two passions by writing about music. From blogging on MySpace in 2007 and then Blogspot, to launching his own website, 83Music, and eventually freelancing for publications in the Pacific Northwest, like Spokane’s alt-weekly Inlander, Ethan’s aim has been to provide fans of music alternatives to the mundane and overplayed. This included a nearly two year stint as the music editor for the Source, where he scoured the Bend music scene drawing attention to local talent and notable touring acts as they passed through town. In addition to deep knowledge of the local music scene, Ethan has an uncanny ability to quote lines from the television show “Friends.” He also has an eye for women’s fashion and feels a kinship with Lucky Day, Steve Martin’s character in ¡Three Amigos!
Tonight’s Live Music: The Deadly Gentlemen
A very good bluegrass band is in town tonight.
Best Band
Look! Up on the stage! It’s a rap artist! It’s a rock band! It’s… expressionist art? The fact is that all answers are at least a little bit true when it comes to describing Bend collective MOsley WOtta (MO WO). The 2010 winner of Bend’s Last Band Standing competition has been dazzling local and regional […]
Not So Fast
Curiosity Wampire Polyvinyl Records Portland lo-fi subdued garage rockers Wampire released their heavenly debut album in May. The album is laced with keys and synth, making for a translucent rock record with abstract tendencies. Tomorrow, Tomorrow Campfires Fire Talk Records The scratchy gypsy throwback rock of Portland’s Campfires is brilliantly filled with a layered sing-along […]
Best Bloody Mary
It’s not hard to imagine a mad bartender stitching together all the parts of the Victorian Café’s meal-in-a-glass Bloody Mary, then throwing some kind of electrifying switch to inject the libation with spicy goodness as devious laughs flood the kitchen. The drink is one wicked concoction. Made with a hefty dose of infused pepper vodka, […]
It Came From the Trees
Every year the popular Pickathon festival outside Portland garners attention for one main aspect of its evolution: its growing attention to sustainability, with organizers eliminating single-use cups as well as disposable food containers, replacing them with souvenir metal tumblers and reusable bamboo plates. Along with solar electricity, commute options and a team of people charged […]
Midlife Memoirs
In Falling Cars and Junkyard Dogs—a collection of short memoirs—alt-country band Son Volt front man Jay Farrar paints a truly heartfelt picture of his classic American upbringing and his wonderful parents. He shares some of the earliest memories that influenced him to become a musician. “I was [in St. Louis] until 1970,” writes Farrar. “… […]
What The Sequel?
Forget about the big commercial music festivals people pay big bucks to attend. Sometimes the smaller, more “experienced-based” events are the better choice when it comes to summertime fun. That’s the idea behind the electronic dance festival known simply as WTF. Sure there is music. Lots of music. Big names too. But WTF is about […]
