This is not the winter that the ski industry, nor skiers, in Oregon wants—and, more broadly, many are worried that this year is a sign of winters to come. Mt. Ashland, which was closed all last season, has eeked open for a few days, and snow coverage at Hoodoo has been spotty. Nordic ski areas—notably […]
Phil Busse
Phil Busse has done his tour of duty with alt-weeklies, starting in 1992 right after graduation from Middlebury College as the first environmental beat reporter for San Francisco Weekly. After a brief detour through the University of Oregon School of Law, Phil returned to writing as the first Managing Editor for Portland Mercury. In 2006, he started the Media Institute for Social Change in Portland, through which he continues to host a summer program teaching college students to produce documentaries.
Until he was 25 or so, Phil thought that he would be a spy, and took scuba lessons to prepare, and learned to drive a motorcycle and an 18-wheeler. Perhaps, then, it is unsurprising that his favorite holiday is the Fourth of July (he loves blowing stuff up). He feels at home with Joseph Conrad's fictional characters.
Venturing Into New Theater
Cascades Theatrical Company is probably best known for staging 20th century classics, like Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, which just wrapped up an extended run. But, starting late in 2014, with a terse production of the intense 2009 Tony Award-winning God of Carnage, CTC has taken a gamble—and is hoping to push some of its patrons […]
What Do You Do With A Dead Deer?
All day long the tune “what do you do with a drunken sailor” has been skipping through my mindโexcept the replacing some of the key words with “dead deer.” As I padded around my house this morning, with a cereal bowl in my hand, I looked out the windowโand saw a deer laying dead by […]
First It Was Love, Then Came The Band
Nearly a decade ago, in 2006, Jakob Breitbach was playing fiddle in a band in Olympia, Washington. He often bumped into Jes Raymond, who sang in another band. “We fell in love in 2006,” remembers Raymond. Yet it wasn’t until three years later until Breitbach joined her band. “We’ve been touring together since,” she says. […]
Art Watch 2/11-2/18
Over the most recent holiday break, Brittaney Toles, the art director for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Oregon, decided that she wanted to transform the central dining and play area at the Boys & Girls Club in Bend. “The wall was dark and sad,” she explained, indicating a structure that actually stretches over […]
More Than Just a Weekend
Named for the three Sister mountain peaks and Broken Top Mountain, which are visible from the venue’s site, 4 Peaks Music Festival has become a highly visible part of Central Oregon’s music scene with its annual summer three-day concert and, now, with a series of preview shows. Still four months from its kickoff, and with […]
Too Bad We Can’t Ski on Tears
“I think it’s obvious to all of us who are skiers and have skied in Central Oregon for a while that there is a change in the weather patterns,” says Matt Fox, who helps coach the Mountain View High School Nordic team. Every Wednesday for the junior racers is an “on snow” day, and so […]
No Mickey Mousing Around
Taken as a whole, the five entries for this year’s Academy Awards for animated shorts and an additional three “highly recommended” films tell a story that is much different than what blockbusters like Frozen would have you believe about the state of animation. No, instead, these films—a collection that’s enchanting, yet dreamy and at times […]
Dispatches from Sundance/Slamdance
BendFilm is reporting from this week’s Sundance/Slamdance Film Festival, which is one of the premier festival of the year, often predicting some of the best films for the coming year – and, who knows, perhaps recruiting some to come to Bend’s Film Festival. Keep up-to-date with their dispatches.
Go Big!
A decade ago, Ravi Drugan was struck by a train; the injuries left him a double amputee. At the time of the accident, he was 15 years old and admits that he wasn’t yet the strongest skier. He was, however, immersed in ski culture. His dad had been skiing since he was two years old, […]
