Marcos Rodriguez already has a small chain of popular Mexican-Peruvian restaurants (Hola!), but last month he opened up a small diner along Third Street, something on par with a popular musician taking on a side project that allows him a bit more authenticity and a bit more latitude to move away from mainstream expectations. Sure, […]
Phil Busse
Phil Busse has done his tour of duty with alt-weeklies, starting in 1992 right after graduation from Middlebury College as the first environmental beat reporter for San Francisco Weekly. After a brief detour through the University of Oregon School of Law, Phil returned to writing as the first Managing Editor for Portland Mercury. In 2006, he started the Media Institute for Social Change in Portland, through which he continues to host a summer program teaching college students to produce documentaries.
Until he was 25 or so, Phil thought that he would be a spy, and took scuba lessons to prepare, and learned to drive a motorcycle and an 18-wheeler. Perhaps, then, it is unsurprising that his favorite holiday is the Fourth of July (he loves blowing stuff up). He feels at home with Joseph Conrad's fictional characters.

A Family Business
For Jennifer Warton, who goes by JB, pediatrics is a family business in more than just the obvious manner: Her father was a family doctor, and greatly influenced her. “I used to do rounds with him at the hospital on weekends,” she explains. “From a young age, I watched him caring for patients and I […]
More Than Ski Porn
Although Warren Miller films are best known for their big and bold images, unbelievable jumps, tumbling wipeouts and swooping snowcapped vistas, it is actually the subtle touches that make these films enduring and captivating—the lowkey elegance that pay homage to ski towns around the world and fawning adulation of personalities and, more specifically, in the […]
Election Results
The mood at the downtown lounge Velvet was subdued. The snowboard video had been switched over to PBS and election results from the east coast were scrolling silently across the scene. City council candidate Nathan Boddie stood silently by the TV screen. It was 8:12 pm and the election results were scheduled to post any […]
A new bakery, another inch on the waistline
The front room to Foxtail Bakeshop, a new bakery adjacent to The Lot, is tidy and looks as if Wes Anderson had designed the space to its very country-style detail: A turquoise chest of drawers serves as a front counter, three skinny chairs huddle in the corner and cookies wait in glass jars next to […]
The Source Reviews “I Believe in Unicorns” for MyWindow
This is both a fun and sad film. There are moments when it is just magical, as a film that has unicorn in its title. It is playful and that burdensome. The story is about a young girl with a big imagination who is stuck in a tight place, taking care of her disabled mom. […]
