On Oct 1, the Deschutes Land Trust publicly announced an ambitious goal to fully reclaim and restore Whychus Creek, a cold water tributary that runs northeast from Sisters into the Deschutes River. In an exclusive interview with the Source, Executive Director Brad Chalfant and Associate Director Zak Boone excitedly laid out a three year campaign […]
Phil Busse
Phil Busse has done his tour of duty with alt-weeklies, starting in 1992 right after graduation from Middlebury College as the first environmental beat reporter for San Francisco Weekly. After a brief detour through the University of Oregon School of Law, Phil returned to writing as the first Managing Editor for Portland Mercury. In 2006, he started the Media Institute for Social Change in Portland, through which he continues to host a summer program teaching college students to produce documentaries.
Until he was 25 or so, Phil thought that he would be a spy, and took scuba lessons to prepare, and learned to drive a motorcycle and an 18-wheeler. Perhaps, then, it is unsurprising that his favorite holiday is the Fourth of July (he loves blowing stuff up). He feels at home with Joseph Conrad's fictional characters.
Hutch’s: Best in the land! Confirmed!
Last week, Hutch’s was crowned with the title as (one of) America’s Best Bike Shops. Congrats, and thanks for keeping our wheels true. From their press release: “Hutchโs Bicycles is proud to announce that we were selected as one of โAmericaโs Best Bike Shopsโ for 2014 by the NDBA, the National Bicycle Dealers Association. We are […]
There Is Only One Rule: Finish!
For Bend Adventure Race, held this weekend, the challenge is to complete a scramble over land and water to reach certain checkpoints—and, ultimately, a finish line somewhere out there in the woods. The rules are both simple and vague: Like a rugged connect-the-dots game sketched across Central Oregon, each team has 30 hours to complete […]
PICK: Cyclocross
BIKES & BEERโIn an encouraging trend, breweries are increasingly sponsoring bike races in town. Boneyardโs third annual Ride Hard Finish Thirsty returns to its bumpy, dirty, muddy and screaming-fun course for a two-day event. 8 am-5 pm. 19449 Tumalo Reservoir Rd. Pre-registration $20.
PICK: Rodeo
NPRA Rodeo Finals RODEOโIf summer in Central Oregon officially begins with the Sisters rodeo, what better way to give a final hoorah and yeehaw than the Northwest Professional Rodeo Association Finals, with bone-shaking bull riding and hold-your-breath calf roping? 7 pm. Crook County Fairgrounds, Prineville. $10, (children 12 & under, free).
PICK: Wild and Scenic Film Festival
Wild and Scenic Film Festival FILMโAn annual tour of high quality, short environmental-based films pulls into town this evening. Like having the pages of National Geographic come alive, the films are as beautiful as they are inspiring, from an insightful piece about fracking in North Dakota to a lush film about water rights in the […]
Recommended Event: Election Mixer
Sort of like speed dating, but with local candidates for city council and county commission, the Bend Chamber is hosting an โElection Mixer.โ But probably no drink offs to determine who is the better wo/man for office; weโre not that Wild West. Thursday, Sept 18. 5 โ 7 pm. Volcanic Theatre Pub, 70 SW Century. […]
PICK: Tony Furtado & Stephanie Schneiderman
MUSICโThe beauty of true vocal harmonizing is that each voice complements and reinforces the other, as does Stephanie Schneidermanโs breathy voice stealthily fill in the twang of Tony Furtadoโs riffs and vocals, like an evening fog settling into the valley. 7 pm. Belfry, 302 E. Main St., Sister. $12.
Editor’s Note: This week’s issue examines city hall
This November, with three seats up for election, voters in Bend have a significant opportunity to change city council. But unlike most cities that are considering similar changes in its primary legislative body, it seems to have been largely a quiet campaign. We hope, however, that we are stirring up some interest in the races […]
