Buehler Dials Up a Gimmick Play

Dr. Buehler gets the this week’s Boot.

In the parlance of politics, a โ€œgimmickโ€ is a sneaky ploy your opponent resorts to. When you do it, itโ€™s called โ€œtaking a statesmanlike position.โ€
Oregon Secretary of State Kate Brown, a Democrat, and Knute Buehler, the Bend Republican whoโ€™s trying to get her job, have been trading jabs over each otherโ€™s alleged gimmickry recently. It started with the Brown campaign calling on Buehler to accept a voluntary $1 million campaign spending limit. Itโ€™s understandable why Brown would welcome that; despite her advantage of incumbency, Buehler already has raked in almost twice as much as she has.

Awesome Land: Women Of Dirt
wednesday 15
Two X chromosomesโ€”thatโ€™s what separates this film from the scores of other bike porn flicks out there, which are dominated by those made up of XY chromosomes, otherwise know as men. Women Of Dirt is all about females who shred. And, while endurance nerds do make a showing in this film, itโ€™s the women in the wonderful worlds of dirt-jumping, freeriding and downhill racing that make the movie special. Support women in the sport โ€”it was a woman who won the U.S.โ€™s only Olympic mountain biking medalโ€”and support this film. $5, cash only. 21+. 8:30 p.m. McMenamins Old St. Francis School, 700 NW Bond St.

Go For the Foodie Gold: Get your own team of friends in the kitchen

Cooking within a foodie group is a chance to venture outside of your comfort zone by experimenting with ingredients and dishes that you might not otherwise cook and to experience other couplesโ€™ attempts to do the same.

โ€œIt sounds like fun, but I really canโ€™t cook unless it involves a crockpot,โ€ was my friend Rogerโ€™s response when I asked if he would be interested in starting a monthly foodie group with me and my fiancรฉe.
But after a little explanation I had lured Roger and his wife, along with three other couples, into the prospect of eating great food and experimenting with different wines and other beverages.
It was a chance for each of us to channel our inner Bobby Flay, despite the fact that none of us even remotely resemble professional chefs.
My own passion for cooking started in high school out of necessity when my mother was diagnosed with cancer and the household meal prep mantra quickly became โ€œhelp out or takeout.โ€

Off Message: The Campaign tries to blend outrageousness with political outrage

Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis star in the new political comedy The Campaign.

People who think a lot about movies tend to put directors in tidy boxes. Call it a remnant of the auteur theory, but we don’t quite know what to do with directors who dabble about in ways that don’t fit an easily-defined artistic compartment. Take The Campaign’s director, Jay Roach, for example. He’s a comedy guy, according to that convenient narrative. He’s the guy who introduced the world to Austin Powers and Greg Focker, whose movies are about doing anything for a belly laugh. Butย  Roach is also a guy who has a more acerbic, down-to-earth sense of the political process, having steered the made-for-cable stories of the 2000 presidential election (Recount) and the Sarah Palin phenomenon (Game Change). Clearly, there are two very distinct creative personalities to this filmmaker. So what happens when he tries to be both at the same time?

County Has Shirked Its Regulatory Responsibility

I appreciated Ms. Marlowe’s article on the illegal B&B situation in our community, and found it to be very fair to all parties.ย  I would just add a couple of items since I, too, live in the neighborhood highlighted.
Of the seven home[owners] on the street involved, five of us have lived here 23-28 years and one has lived here since they built their house over five years ago.ย  Ms Malnik (the B&B owner) has lived here 4 months.ย  Before she bought the house, she announced her intention to open a B&B, and we neighbors wrote back to let her know we didn’t want a business in our established neighborhood, and she should consider buying somewhere else so she wouldn’t find herself encumbered by a property she couldn’t use for a B&B.

NRA Boot is an Affront to Freedom

You clowns are despicable. Saying that the National Rifle Association kills people is the most egregious effrontery Iโ€™ve read in a long time, and that includes the countless buffooneries the left propagates all the time. Whatโ€™s worse, your comments show your total ignorance regarding the firearms issue, not to mention your illogic and lack of stats. Your whole Boot article is childish and a nonsensical screed.
There is a good reason you boneheads are called the loony left and your reactionary response is what I would expect. You conveniently ignore that where there is easy access to concealed weapons permits gun violence goes down. Regarding gun control regulations you are right (even a blind chick gets a kernel now and then), regulations donโ€™t equal confiscation. What you failed to mention is that regulation inevitably leads to confiscation or banning.

Merkleyโ€™s Crooked River Plan

Merkley gets this week’s Glass Slipper.

Itโ€™s been said that the hallmark of a good compromise is that no one gets everything that they want, but everyone gets something. Thatโ€™s pretty much the summation of the recent agreement about how to apportion the remaining unclaimed water in the Prineville Reservoir.
The agreement, which was brokered by Senator Jeff Merkley, D-OR, and his staff, divides the remaining resource between wildlife, farmers, and the growing city of Prineville that, according to city staff, is running out of available water for future growth.
It also addresses the issue of whether Bowman Dam will be available for hydroelectric power development.
