It’s been said that the hallmark of a good compromise is that no one gets everything that they want, but everyone gets something. That’s pretty much the summation of the recent agreement about how to apportion the remaining unclaimed water in the Prineville Reservoir.
The agreement, which was brokered by Senator Jeff Merkley, D-OR, and his staff, divides the remaining resource between wildlife, farmers, and the growing city of Prineville that, according to city staff, is running out of available water for future growth.
It also addresses the issue of whether Bowman Dam will be available for hydroelectric power development.

Ashton Eaton Decathlon Competition

Watch our homegrown Olympian Ashton Eaton compete for gold in the final events of the decathlon streamed live from London. Eaton is already the world record holder in the decathlon after he crushed the 1992 record in the Olympic trials in June. This guy is a machine, able to long jump 27 feet and clear a bar nearly 17½ feet off the ground. He runs the 100 meter in 10.21 seconds and the mile in a screaming fast 4:14. Now on the world stage he competes representing the U.S., the U of O, and lil’ old Bend, Ore. 9:30 a.m. Tower Theater, 835 NW Wall St.

So, Crux Fermentation Project has had its own beer on for a little over a month now—we figured it was time to duck out on our weekly production day and throw back some pints. You know, fortify, for when we got back to the office and everyone was pissed.
And we gotta say, Crux, it was worth it. Your beers are out of the ordinary and we like that. We tried all five of the brewery’s selections on draft. Here’s what we think:
• Crux “Sugar Daddy” SPA, 7.1%, 50 IBU—It’s like sweet tea meets a citrusy Pale/IPA. Perfumy, but not sickening so. Definitely something different.
• Crux “On the Fence” NW Pale Ale, 8%, 50 IBU—This beer typifies the Crux line-up with its big, round, smooth malt profile. Very light citrus notes and with a dose of skunkiness.

Athletes, on your mark, get set, knit.
Welcome to the 2012 Ravellenic Games, the most buzzed about event in recent fiber arts history. As the Olympics are underway across the pond, local knitters are participating in their own international version of the greatest games, including “events” like the bag-n-tote backstroke and hand-dyed high dive.
The “games” were dreamed up by a knitters social website, called Ravelry, where knitters can share their excitement over their Ravthlete knitting feats. Crafters form teams, pull forgotten skeins of yarn out of craft boxes and select patterns, all as warm-ups for their own Olympic-inspired knitting events.
Team Imperial, which has challenged itself to a sweater triathlon, is just one of the local teams participating in games.

Every once in a while, a game comes along that changes my opinion about the genre it represents. Endless Space is just such a game. Graphically pleasing, this debut title from Amplitude Studios brings unprecedented depth to the 4X hemisphere of strategy gaming.
For those of you who don’t know what a 4X game is, simply put, it is a turn-based strategy game based on four “X’s” – eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate. You are given a small empire, you build it up by colonizing, building resources (or simply ravishing other areas for what you need), researching technologies, building up your military and then attacking other areas.

A recent article in the Source, (July 12) written by Jim Anderson, left me shaking my head. In his article, “Time for a Cat Management Plan” his message seems to be that feral cats carry the plague; they will spread it to humans, and therefore they need to be exterminated through euthanasia. He states that cats are killers by nature. True. So are domestic dogs that roam in packs, killing or maiming livestock. Oh, and humans kill other humans through ethnic cleansing, war atrocities, etc.

Some corporate heavyweights have squared off in the battle over same-sex marriage, and they’re throwing haymakers at each other in the form of big bags of money.
In the pro-marriage equality corner we have Steve Bezos, billionaire founder of Amazon, and his wife, MacKenzie, who last week announced they’re contributing $250 million to help pass Washington state’s Referendum 74. (The state legislature legalized same-sex marriage in February, but right-wing Christian zealots gathered signatures to put the law up for a popular vote.)

I am saddened by the article regarding the shooting on Awbrey Butte.
The tone, as I perceive it, is, “Let’s make this a murder mystery and make the rich guy look questionable!”
Very Un-Source like.
I am sure Mr. Munoz was a good friend, dad, etc. And no one could feel anything but sympathy for his family. But HE made that one sorrowful decision to invade a home.
Whether his intention was to steal the family jewels or just get a glass of milk, HE CHOSE to put the homeowner in a situation of defense. The homeowner could not know if it was milk or meth money or blood Mr. Munoz was after. (And trying to talk this through with a home invader? That would be crazily dangerous.)

It’s one thing to hear of disenfranchised voters across the country in Florida, Ohio, or Wisconsin; what is that but abstract hearsay? But now we have proof and ample witnesses of just that here in the Pacific Northwest.
Most voters don’t realize the representative process for the citizen is the Precinct Representative, or PCP. The Republican Party PCPs from across the state held their convention June 23rd. There were five conventions across the state with approximately 900 PCPs in attendance. We drove from all over the state to five separate locations and spent at least 12 hours voting for the Oregon State Republican delegates, state electors, and their alternates, some of whom will go to Tampa, Florida at the end of August to represent the Oregon voters’ choice for the Republican presidential nominee.
